Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Metal fabricators play a very important role in many areas. The construction sector in particular cannot survive without reliable metal fabricators. When you have a project that needs the services of a good fabricator, you must make sure you look for the best so that your project works out very fine. In structural development projects such as home building and other engineering projects, the quality of fabrication influences the outcome of a project in a major way.

Role of Fabricators in the Auto Industry

The automobile welding fabricators industry Houston is a major client for fabrication services. This is mainly because the auto body building process mainly involves the use of metals to create the body parts that dealers assemble together to make the different car models that you admire and drive. Collision repair is another area that cannot survive without the contribution of the best Welding Fabricators Houston can offer. Swine flu outbreaks appear globally; WHO raises pandemic alert level to 5

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

New cases of the swine flu virus have been reported around the world in recent days, prompting fear of a global influenza pandemic. As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the pandemic alert level to 5. The United Nations has warned that the disease can not be contained. At least 91 confirmed cases of the flu have been reported worldwide.

In a special report, Wikinews takes a look at the reaction to the outbreak, and how different countries around the world have been affected by it.

The disease, which is believed to have originated in Mexico, has now spread across the globe, with confirmed cases having been reported in Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, New Zealand, Costa Rica and Israel. The United States has also reported its first death from the disease in a toddler. South Korea and France both had probable cases.

The WHO said on Tuesday that while it was not yet certain that the outbreak would turn into pandemic, countries should prepare for the worst. “Countries should take the opportunity to prepare for a pandemic,” said the acting assistant director-general for the WHO, Keiji Fukuda.

“Based on assessment of all available information, and following several expert consultations, I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5,” said Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the WHO, in a statement on Wednesday. “…All countries should immediately activate their pandemic preparedness plans. Countries should remain on high alert for unusual outbreaks of influenza-like illness and severe pneumonia.” After the announcement was made, Wikinews learned that the WHO website had crashed for several minutes, presumably due to high traffic volume.

There is no vaccine for swine flu. In 1976 during an outbreak of the virus, at least 500 people became seriously ill, and of them, 25 had died when inoculated with an attempt at a vaccination. The 500 that became ill developed a neurological disorder called Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) which caused paralysis “and is characterized by various degrees of weakness, sensory abnormalities and autonomic dysfunction.” Those who developed the disorder did so because of an immunopathological reaction to the drug. Nearly 40 million US residents, including then US president Gerald Ford, were inoculated.

Screening measures at Canadian airports have been raised on Tuesday to screen passengers returning from Mexico for symptoms of swine flu. The measures come amid reports that thirteen people have now been infected in the country, in four different provinces.

The Public Health Agency has recommended Canadians who have booked flights to Mexico to delay them if possible. Those who choose to fly anyway will be asked questions about their health after they return, such as whether they have had symptoms of the flu, like diarrhea, coughing, or a sore throat. If anyone answers in the affirmative, they may be further assessed and perhaps transferred to a quarantine officer, who will suggest that they seek medical help, or isolate themselves at home.

“These measures will help to prevent further spread and protect the health of Canadians and we thank you for your patience and co-operation with this process,” said the chief public health officer, David Butler-Jones.

Several Canadian airlines have also limited or cancelled flights to Mexico. Air Transat and its partner tour companies, Nolitours and Transat Holidays, have cancelled all flights bound to Mexico until June 1. West Jet has also stated that it will suspend all vacation planning and air flights for Cancun, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, and other destinations in Mexico.

Egypt, which has not yet reported any cases of the flu, has recently begun a campaign to slaughter all 300,000 pigs in the country, despite assurances by health officials that the disease is not transmitted from animals to humans. “It has been decided to immediately start slaughtering all the pigs in Egypt using the full capacity of the country’s slaughterhouses,” Egypt’s health minister, Hatem el-Gabaly, told reporters.

Farmers have been protesting the measure. At one pig farming area in the country, crowds of farmers blockaded the roads to prevent health officials from entering to slaughter their pigs. Some of the farmers hurled stones at officials’ vehicles, and the latter was forced to retreat without killing any of the animals.

In Mexico, the epicentre of the outbreak, officials have announced up to 159 suspected deaths from the virus, out of a total of 2,498 suspected cases. The Mexican cabinet has announced that all flights departing from Mexico City will be suspended, while Argentina and Cuba have both cancelled all flights to the country. The European Union and the US have both issued warnings against traveling to Mexico.

The Royal Caribbean cruise line has suspended all stops in Mexico indefinitely, while Norwegian Cruise Line announced that its vessels will not make stops at Mexican ports until September of this year.

The government has ordered all restaurants in the country’s capital to serve only carry-out food, and closed archaeological sites with the intent of limiting large groupings of people. Churches, gyms, pool halls, and other institutions in Mexico City have been asked to close. School classes across the country have been suspended until May 6.

The Mexican government has estimated that the epidemic is costing companies in the capital at least US$57 million per day, and that tourism revenue has dropped by 36%. The finance ministry has set up a special fund of $450 million to fight the disease.

Thirteen confirmed cases have been known in New Zealand. All of them have been prescribed the antiviral drug Tamiflu.

New Zealand airports have now started to screen at least ten thousand people who arrive in the country from flights from Northern America. Those who display symptoms of the flu are taken aside by health authorities and placed into a quarantine.

“The number of suspected cases is likely in increase,” said Fran McGrath, the Deputy Director of Public Health. “While the numbers in any category will fluctuate, this is a pattern to be expected from an influenza outbreak. It is important to note that the 13 people we are treating as confirmed cases have all had mild flu symptoms, have received treatment and are all on the mend of have recovered.”

Spain’s health minister Trinidad Jinenez announced on Wednesday that a total of 53 persons in the country are under observation for the influenza. The number of confirmed cases in the country has been risen from four to ten, including one person who did not obtain the illness by traveling to Mexico.

Until now, Jimenez said that all of Spain’s confirmed cases involved persons who had recently visited Mexico, where the outbreak is believed to have began.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that five people who recently visited Mexico are now ill with the swine flu in the United Kingdom. “All of them have traveled recently from Mexico,” he said. “All of them have mild symptoms. All of them are receiving and responding well to treatment.”

The school of one the infected people, a twelve-year-old girl from Torbay, has been shut down and its 230 pupils given the drug Tamiflu, Brown said.

The Prime Minister said that the country is preparing for a possible pandemic. It has increased its stocks of antiviral drugs, enough for fifty million people, and ordered additional face masks for health workers. The government has encouraged all British residents to avoid travel to Mexico.

A 23-month-old boy from Mexico died at a Houston, Texas hospital on Wednesday, the first casualty from swine flu in the United States. The child had arrived in Brownsville, Texas, near the border with Mexico, with unspecified “underlying health issues” on April 4. Several days later, he presented symptoms of swine flu, and was hospitalized on April 13. The next day, the boy was transferred to a Houston hospital, where he remained until dying on Monday night of pneumonia brought on by the virus.

In response to the epidemic, Texas governor Rick Perry has given a disaster declaration. Schools have closed down statewide. Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has also declared a state of emergency in his state.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the number of incidents of swine flu in the country to 64 on Tuesday.

President Barack Obama has asked Congress for a fund of $1.5 billion to fight the outbreak, saying that it is needed for “maximum flexibility to allow us to address this emerging situation.”

US health authorities have warned that more cases and fatalities from the flu are probable. “We expect to see more cases, more hospitalizations, and, unfortunately, we are likely to see more deaths from the outbreak,” said Kathleen Sebelius, the Health and Human Services secretary.

Ride On Motor Vehicles What About The Exciting?

Submitted by: Ariel Post

A great deal has been authored about the worth of ride on cars and trucks. There are posts on the background of when trip on autos began and how they designed around the many years. There are articles on the protection facets of todays experience on toys in comparison to a long time back. You can also examine about the nuts and bolts of different companies and products.

You will also locate volumes created about the discovering possibilities offered to youthful little ones by taking part in on a experience on auto. Factors such as hand-eye co-ordination, motor capabilities, approach expertise, even pre-driver instruction for an car license later on.

All of these important things are accurate. Ride on autos are a amazing device for the improvement of a childs talents in all sorts of spots.

But then, really very little is stated about the most vital aspect of why a mother or father or grandparent buys a trip on motor vehicle or journey on toy for their little 1. Maybe this motive has been pushed to the qualifications because of the political correctness of the times.

Perhaps it is extra socially satisfactory to checklist off attributes and gains related to learning and protection and even how pedal strength is a green and sustainable propulsion procedure.

But what about the key rationale that the child hops on a journey on auto in the initially spot….Fun!!!

That is ideal … trip on cars are entertaining!

Its no large technique. Youngsters are not studying guides or heading to classes to study everything they can about the protection features or the manufacturing tactics of their journey on toys. They just want to get on the issue and go! As prolonged as it appears to be like superior has shiny colours and does what its intended to do then almost nothing else matters.

The seem of delight on their face when they first look at out their new ride on toy is a thing that just about every father or mother and grandparent treasures. Its an working experience of satisfaction that resonates in the two the kid and the grownup, as the adult connects with inner thoughts from their earlier when they too experienced a related practical experience of delight.

Currently being a kid is all about having pleasurable as a great deal and as usually as attainable and a new experience on auto retains the risk of getting heaps of fun effectively into the future.

Not only can it be solo exciting, but if siblings or good friends also have experience on motor vehicles then the prospects for team enjoyment open appropriate up. When remaining to their private devices youngsters as a team can be very inventive when it arrives to playtime. Trip on toys can turn into an integral component of a childs outside activities.

These times out of doors routines should really be a emphasis for dad and mom seeking for a little something to occupy their childs time. Non-aerobic things to do like personal computer game titles be they on a Pc or a hand held gadget do very little for a childs physical health. Computer system video games have their place but there is a hazard that they will turn into the dominant kind of action for youngsters main to all types of troubles later on in existence.

Ride on autos on the other hand include bodily enjoyable, and in unique when it happens to pedal cars, the physical exercise is really effective.

Its all about fresh air, training, laughter and the joy of currently being alive.

Banned film ‘The Profit’ appears on Web

Sunday, March 23, 2008

Copies of The Profit, a 2001 film blocked from distribution in the United States due to a court injunction won by the Church of Scientology, appeared on the Internet Friday on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on the video sharing site YouTube.

Directed by former film executive Peter N. Alexander, the movie has been characterized by critics as a parody of Scientology and of its founder L. Ron Hubbard. Alexander was a Scientologist for twenty years, and left the organization in 1997. The film was funded by Bob Minton, a former critic of Scientology who later signed an agreement with the Church of Scientology and has attempted to stop distribution of the film. Alexander has stated that the movie is based on his research into cults, and when asked by the St. Petersburg Times about parallels to Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard said: “I’ll let you draw that conclusion … I say it’s entirely fictional.”

The film was released in August 2001, and was shown at a movie theatre in Clearwater, Florida and at a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France. A Scientology spokesman gave a statement at the time saying “the movie is fiction and has nothing to do with Scientology”. The Church of Scientology later took legal action in an attempt to stop further distribution of the film. The Church of Scientology claimed that the film was intended to influence the jury pool in the wrongful death case of Scientologist Lisa McPherson, who died under Scientology care in Clearwater, Florida.

In April 2002, a Pinellas County, Florida judge issued a court order enjoining The Profit from worldwide distribution for an indefinite period. According to the original court injunction received by Wikinews, the movie was originally banned because the court found that it could be seen as a parody of Scientology. In his April 20, 2002 ruling on the injunction, Judge Robert E. Beach of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Pinellas County, Florida wrote: “…an average person viewing the film entitled The Profit could perceive that it is a parody of the Church of Scientology”.

“To the extent that any person considered as a potential juror in evaluating any issues involving the Church of Scientology, the process of voir dire provides a fair and complete remedy to eliminate any potential juror that may possibly have been influenced to be less than fair and impartial,” added Beach.

Luke Lirot, the attorney for the film’s production company, announced on the film’s website on April 7, 2007 that “We have absolutely no exposure for any repercussions from the court order,” but that the film was still blocked from distribution due to an ongoing legal battle. Lirot wrote: “all that’s stopping the release of the movie is the legal battle with the partner who was compromised by Scientology (Robert Minton) and is currently using his power as partner to stop the release of the film.”

In an October 2007 article, The Times described the film as “banned in the US because of a lawsuit taken out against it by The Church of Scientology,” and Russ Kick’s The Disinformation Book of Lists included the film in his “List of 16 Movies Banned in the U.S.”. An 8-minute teaser segment from The Profit appeared on the film’s website and on the video sharing site YouTube in February 2008, and an attorney representing Bob Minton sent a letter to Luke Lirot requesting that the film clip be taken down. In a response letter, Lirot wrote that “Rather than damage any asset of the LLC, the short clip merely keeps the film in the public eye, and in a positive way.”

On Friday, copies of the film began to circulate on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on YouTube. A link related to the film’s appearance on the Internet on the community-based link aggregator website Digg.com had 3,638 “Diggs” – and hit the front page of the site’s Entertainment section on Saturday.

I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I’m happy it’s out there.

On Saturday, Scientology critic and Emmy award-winning journalist Mark Bunker put a streaming version of the film on his website, www.xenutv.com, and encouraged others to watch and discuss the film on a real-time chat channel. In a video posting to YouTube Saturday, Bunker said “I did not do it. I had nothing to do with it … I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I’m happy it’s out there … people are finally having a chance to see it. A lot of people have been curious over the years and there’s been a lot of interest in seeing the film, so finally you can.”

We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it.

On the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology, a poster by the username “Alexia Death” commented on the film’s appearance on the Internet in the context of censorship: “It is out! And so it is a WIN if many people review it even if they say it SUCKS! … Being bad is no cause to allow censorship … And being censored is no cause to assume its good”. A post to the blog Blogsreel commented: “We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it.”

In a post on Sunday to the message board attached to the official website for the film, attorney Luke Lirot asked that individuals stop distributing copies of The Profit over the Internet. Lirot wrote: “It has been brought to my attention that several unauthorized transmissions and downloads of this protected work have taken place over the last 72 hours. Such actions are copyright violations and are unlawful. I request that any further distribution and/or dissemination of this important work cease immediately and any copies of the work that have been downloaded please be deleted.” In his statement, Lirot recognized the rights of individuals under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, but also said that unauthorized distribution of the film “will only serve to harm the goal of vast distribution”.

Blog postings have attributed the film’s appearance on the Internet as part of the anti-Scientology movement Project Chanology organized by the Internet-based group Anonymous, but this has not been confirmed. Wikinews previously reported on international protests against Scientology which took place as part of Project Chanology on February 10 and March 15. A third international protest by Anonymous is scheduled for April 12. Titled “Operation Reconnect”, the third international protest will focus on highlighting Scientology’s practice of disconnection.

Algerian driver released by hostage takers in Niger

Friday, April 30, 2010

An Algerian driver has been released by his hostage takers in Niger. The man was abducted on April 20 along with a French tourist he was driving.

The Frenchman, who is in his 70s, is still being held hostage; the pair were taken at gunpoint near the Mali and Algerian boarders. The gunmen are reported to have links to al-Qaeda.

It is reported that the driver was released in the last few days and has already returned to Algeria. Apparently, he was released in the Mali desert and made his own way back to Algeria. “Some people riding camels found him wandering. After some explanations, they took him to Algeria,” said a Nigerien military source to the Reuters news service.

The pair were abducted only days after four countries near the Sahara opened a military base to combat al-Qaeda. The vicinity in which the kidnapping took place is known as the “red zone”; foreign offices recommend that tourists avoid the area near the Sahara.

Hostage takings have become more frequent with governments having more trouble controlling the problem. Recently the Mali government sparked a row with Mauritania over the release of four militants.

Opening A Small Business}

Opening a Small Business

by

Terry Kyle1. Recognize why you want to set up your own small business. It’s like going to the hardware store thinking that you

want a drill, when in fact you actually just need a hole. What’s the difference? The difference is that having a

laser-focused, crystal-clear outline of what you want at the end can massively accelerate progress towards that

goal. Imagine if an overweight person went on a diet with no pound-loss goal or time frame goals e.g. “I want to

lose 10 pounds in the next 30 days”.

Their diet would probably not succeed.

Similarly, joining a martial arts class without the goal of reaching a certain belt or tournament in a certain time

frame would also probably not succeed. In relation to opening a small business, you need to decide what income,

lifestyle and personal goals you are shooting for. Bear in mind that progress is never as fast as any of us want in

our impatient world so think in terms of year-to-year and month-to-month progress. For example, “by August next

year, I want to have my Level 3 Personal Training qualification, have built up commercial relationships with 7 gyms,

have 25 private personal training clients and be making a $1100 a week profit. Even this should be further lasered

down to even more micro-specific goals.

Without this ‘satellite navigation’ method for your small business, how can

it get to any destination?

2. The first lap of the track is the hardest. By this, I mean the first week, month and year of your new business

will be the trickiest. Why? Because when we learn anything new, we make mistakes. And then more mistakes. And

probably even more after that. But that’s OK because failing our way forward is not just one way we learn, in fact,

it’s the only way we learn. Fail your way forward and let go of any silly ideas that failing is bad. You just cannot

learn without failing. Failing is great because it adds to a knowledge base and success is impossible or at least

extremely unlikely without a knowledge base. So don’t waste time procrastinating about whether to open a small

business. You are going to be failing and screwing up in the first six months to year anyway so why not get started

now?

That is, provided you follow point three below.

3. I call this the Jumping Between Moving Cars method. When making the leap from a normal 9-5 job to a new small

business, it is vitally important that the other source of income is moving (like a car driving in parallel in the

movies), i.e. making money. It is crazy to jump from a stable income source to one that is not yet rolling. However,

aspiring entrepreneurs do this all the time. Ever seen what happens in the movies to the guy trying to jump from the

burning vehicle into the safe one beside him and misses? Ouch! Yes, having two jobs going at once is hard work and

yes it will be stressful for a while.

But isn’t living life on your own terms with freedom of time and money, possibly for the rest of your life worth it?

4. Which small business is the safest, best and most lucrative for you to go for? I get asked this question a lot

and my best advice is to go for a business that suits your own individual personality very well e.g. there is good

money in vending machines but you may, for instance, prefer hosting haunted historical tours in your area because

you love history, are interested in the supernatural and love meeting and talking to people.

The business has to fit your own personality well. And, it should have a very low financial downside – preferably almost nil. The internet makes ultra low-cost marketing and selling more possible than ever before so don’t jump into expensive long-term

shop leases, staff contracts, equipment purchases and so on. Work from home, use the internet, put flyers in letterboxes yourself, get out and talk to your target market (for free) and do everything for as little money as possible.

Then if the business fails – which it might, at least for a while – you have only sacrificed your time.

5. Final point. Over the course of my professional career in marketing and business, I’ve met many very rich and

successful entrepreneurs and I’ve also met many failed entrepreneurs. What’s the main difference between the two

groups? Intelligence? Nope. Charm? Nope. Luck? Nope. Coming from a rich family? Nope. In fact, the main difference

was that the ones who had Made It had a totally pigheaded stubbornness to do whatever it took to learn the specific

skill set to make money.

Stubbornness.

Do not underestimate the power of it if you are serious about success. The entrepreneurial failures were distracted by TV, too much socializing, jumping from one get rich scheme to another and another and any other shiny thing that came into their orbit. In short, the winners were not distracted. The losers were.

Now go and open a small business that gives you freedom and control over your life.
