Increasing The Worth Of Your Respective Home With Wood Floors

Submitted by: Ray Schlichter

As a homeowner we generally would like to increase the significance of our property. You realize it’s a wise expense since though though the economic climate is presently along, a house will generally expand in importance with just about every advancement which you make. But mainly because the economy is in the dumps, it truly is now not sensible or practical to carry out a home fairness mortgage and frivolously invest. Like a homeowner in this tight economic climate you might have to generally be smart about how you spend your income and wherever you devote your funds.

You will discover dozens of choices on how to commit your income into your home and also to boost your own home’s importance and, just as crucial, your home’s aesthetics. One way that you’ll be able to commit into your own home is typically forgotten about because you stroll on it daily. Committing within the floors of one’s property appears easy and isn’t going to seem to become a profitable financial commitment, but it really is. The instance we’ll use is adding wood flooring on your household. Wood is typically overlooked as an expense option since we assume of it purely as an aesthetic advancement. This can be why wood floors are in excess of only a ground.

Wood is coming rear into prominence as being a flooring option for several distinct motives; the very first can be the most significant if you happen to be ecologically minded. Wood is now getting harvested sustainably because of new methods which can be environmentally pleasant. Clear cutting is actually a form of harvesting that is certainly dying out because it kills the property and is economically unsustainable. New harvesting techniques happen to be developed and now you can find now additional trees in America and Canada than there has ever been since the documenting of this kind of stats. Lumber firms realized that although clear cutting brought in large amounts of wood, they ended up being easily killing the future of their trade. New procedures have already been produced that happen to be just like what hunters use, in the event the tree isn’t outdated plenty of or grown sufficient it’s left for being until a afterwards day. Harvesting businesses also plant bushes inside regions that they just cut.

Now that you choose to know that the wood floors you wish will not be killing the natural environment it is possible to also bring to coronary heart the actual fact that wood can boost the significance of one’s home by up to 20% or much more, relying around the quality of wood and how much of it you use to floor your house. Why does wood add all this worth? The response lies within the length of everyday life wood has. Because of modern day wood treatments plus the high quality of wood selected, on normal wood ground lasts 40 a long time! This is 4 times extended than the longest life expectancy of floor flooring! Good quality wood has even been regarded to final more than one hundred years. Wood flooring if effectively treated and maintained can last an extended time and that is one particular in the main causes wood adds value for your residence.

Although the most significant motive of all will be the aesthetic worth of wood and how it may make a residence a home. With so many unique types of timber to choose from, a house operator can layout a ground that suits their requirements and their feeling of type. From possibilities like a dark wealthy Maple wood ground, with a beautifully lgt Cherry wood flooring, the choices are several along with the types are pretty much unlimited. Inside conclude picking a wood ground not simply improves the benefit of the dwelling, it also creates gorgeous floors which will last decades. For more facts, we suggest visiting your regional flooring installer and discovering out how an choice in wood floors greater than pays for its self around the a long time.

Kazakhstan: President Nazarbayev signs decree to change Kazakh characters from Cyrillic to Latin-based script

Monday, October 30, 2017

On Friday Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree to change the country’s official script for the Kazakh language from Cyrillic script to Latin-based script. The president announced signing the decree on his official website.

Per the decree, “a gradual transition of the Kazakh alphabet to the Latin-based script” is expected through 2025. Kazakh is currently written in a derived version of Cyrillic script, with their alphabet consisting of 42 characters, of which 33 characters which can be found in the Russian language. The other nine characters are for sounds used in Kazakh. Asserting modernisation, the ministry of foreign affairs said, “[Latin] is used by approximately 70 percent of all countries, making it an essential part of communicating across the globe, especially in terms of technology, business, science and education”.

The language has been written in Cyrillic script for about 77 years, after it replaced Latin script in 1940, Back then, the modern-day Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union, and Latin script was used for Kazakh since 1929. Before that, Kazakh was written in Arabic.

Countries like Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which also became independent after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, had switched from Cyrillic characters to Latin characters after gaining independence. In April, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has been in power since the Soviet collapse in 1991, said, “By the end of 2017, after consultation with academics and representatives of the public, a single standard for the new Kazakh alphabet and script should be developed”. He called using Cyrillic script “political”.

Cyrillic script is used to write the Russian language, the second official language of Kazakhstan. Russians form a large ethnic group in the country, and the 2009 census indicated about 85% of the Kazakh population were Russian-fluent, while about 62 percent of the population could speak and write in Kazakh fluently.

Australian company to make solar power with space technology

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Solar Systems Pty Ltd, Hawthorn, Victoria, have announced an agreement with Boeing Australia Ltd for supply of Spectrolab solar cells. The agreement will result in the supply of 500,000 cells, capable of generating 11MW of electricity.

Spectrolab produces multi-junction solar cells, originally designed for powering satellites. The solar cells are three times more efficient than the cells used in typical domestic solar panels, and are capable of converting light energy to electrical energy with up to 34% efficiency according to NREL’s National Centre for Photovoltaics. Solar Systems utilise Spectrolab’s multi-junction solar cells to increase the output of their dish systems.

Solar Systems have already trialed the cells in one of their CS500 concentrating solar dishes installed at a solar power station in Hermannsburg, Central Australia, established to reduce the consumption of diesel in the remote community. Simply replacing the existing cells with the Spectrolab multi-junction solar cells increased output from 24kW to 34kW.

Solar Systems is planning to use the technology in a solar power station it will build in northern Victoria, with a capacity of 154MW.

Crystal Pendulums For Self Help}

Crystal Pendulums For Self Help

A crystal pendulum is a bright crystal attached to either a chain or a cord and used for divination. The chain or cord is usually at least six inches in length, and a shoelace will work well if you don’t have a chain or cord. Pendulums have been used for centuries, and I have a few pendulums that I use for different purposes, as each of them has a different vibration. They are also used for aura cleansing and during religious ceremonies.

You don’t need a special pendulum or even a fancy one if you plan to use it for divination, anything that can be attached via a cord or chain will do. I’ve also attached them with shoestrings or wire that I purchased at the hardware store. Also, any kind of twine, string, or even a strip of left over cloth can be used. The cloth in itself can be brightly colored or coorespond with any chakra which you are attempting to activate. Your choices are numerous!

Usually the crystal at the end of the pendulum is pointed, although I’ve made potent pendulums from all sorts of stones, including strawberry quartz and an apophylite pyramid. They will work no matter what stone you chose. Just allow yourself to be open to the vibration of the crystal, and you will find the right pendulum for you.

Many people feel that a pendulum is an extension of ourselves, the extra arm or spiritual part which connects to the divine. It is essentially an extension of our own being and of our spiritually.

Pendulums are also used as protection against evil spirits or unforeseen circumstances.

Pendulums are mostly used to answer questions regarding everyday life and they are very effective. They are very useful in this regard.

They are also used over the body, especially the chakra areas, in order to determine blockages or any kind of hindrance in the emotional, spiritual, mental or physical part of the system.

My grandfather was a water witch, so his pendulum per se was an old willow branch. He divined for water on his farm in Kansas, as he needed a well for his farm and his family. The well he found was full of water for nearly eighty before it finally dried up two years ago. This technique is called pendulum dowsing, and can also be used for finding oil and other minerals.

Crystal pendulum usage is primarily an activity that you’ll do by yourself. It’s best done when in a meditative mood and when one is calm and relaxed., and also when you’re not apt to be disturbed.

A pendulum swings back and forth from the reader’s fingertips. Quite often, it will also swing in a circle, either clockwise or counterclockwise. The weight at the end of the pendulum is called a bob, and a bob can be any kind of crystal, metal, or found object.

If you wish further information, please feel free to contact me. I’m always eager to answer any questions about crystals, jewelry, psychic endeavors, or anything else. Warm wishes…Kay

Controversial medical center demolished in Buffalo, New York

Saturday, May 26, 2007

A medical center, once the site of intense controversy over abortion in the 1990s, which has been vacant for nearly 10 years, was imploded in Buffalo, New York at 6:00 a.m. [eastern time] today.

Several streets in about a 2 block radius were shut down until the implosion occurred and the dust settled. At least 200 people watched in nearby parking lots and on rooftops of buildings to get a good look at the implosion.

The ground and the walls of buildings shook as the dynamite detonated and a brief shock wave could be felt as far as 1 1/2 blocks away. Witnesses even reported small pieces of bricks and concrete falling out of some buildings, but no one was injured.

The building, owned by Kaleida Health, once housed several medical offices, including an abortion clinic. Hundreds of people protested about the abortions outside the center during the Spring of Life Movement in 1992, but other medical procedures and treatments were also part of the center’s services. It was built in 1965 and was 14 floors tall.

Kaleida Health had the building imploded so that the current Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus can be expanded. Several other major medical facilities are also in the same area including Roswell Cancer Institute and Buffalo General Hospital.

“This implosion of 50 High Street will continue the explosion of growth on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. This event will ensure future opportunity for investment, development and growth,” said the CEO and President of Kaleida Health in a statement on Thursday.

US researchers find a large asteroid held together by forces other than gravity

Saturday, August 16, 2014

A team of researchers from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has confirmed that near-Earth asteroid (29075) 1950 DA is primarily held together by van der Waals forces rather than gravity. They have shown that the rotation rate of the 1.1 km asteroid is higher than could be possible if only gravity and friction were responsible for holding it together. Cohesive forces prevent large scale shedding of material and breakup of the asteroid. Their study was published Wednesday in Nature.

The researchers found that the bulk density 1.7±0.7 g/cm³ of the asteroid is approximately two times lower than the value required for self-gravity to balance out the centrifugal forces caused by rotation. As Ben Rozitis, a planetary scientist and a co-author of the study, told Space.com: “I was expecting to find a high-density metallic asteroid, as such an asteroid wouldn’t require cohesive forces to hold itself together under its fast rotation. Instead we found the opposite! […] We knew from previous work that this asteroid was rotating faster than it should be, and we wanted to know why”.

Spectral observations of 1950DA indicated that it is either an E- or M-type asteroid in the Tholen classification. However, its low optical albedo and low radar circular polarization ratio (a very smooth surface at centimetre to decimetre scales) showed that it cannot be an E-type asteroid.

Unusually for an M-type asteroid (which are mostly metallic), 1950DA has low radar albedo. It would have been puzzling, if it was not for the Rosetta observations of 21 Lutetia, which is also an M-type asteroid with very similar low radar albedo. Researchers have used for 1950DA the same meteorite analogue which was earlier found to fit best 21 Lutetia: enstatite chondrite with grain density of 3.55 g/cm³. It allowed to calculate macro-porosity of 51±19%, indicating that 1950DA is a rubble-pile asteroid.

Taking into account thermal-infrared measurements of thermal inertia, presence of a fine-grained regolith is implied, primarily around 1950DA’s equator. Negative ambient gravity near the equator of the asteroid (48±24% of its surface) requires existence of cohesive forces to prevent loss of material. This is similar to an effect noticed between the fine grains of regolith on the Moon. Lunar regolith was found to be highly cohesive because of van der Waals forces between grains by the Apollo 17 expedition in 1974.

As Ben Rozitis explained: “We found a low-density rubble pile that traditionally would be unable to hold itself together unless cohesive forces were present. It’s exciting because we’ve provided the first evidence that cohesive forces are important for small asteroids, which had only been predicted up until now.”

The balance between cohesion and negative gravity requires small grain sizes consistent with the grain size distribution on 1950DA, and similar to that of another rubble-pile asteroid, (25143) Itokawa. Unlike Itokawa, 1950DA does not have large boulders on the surface; they may have been lost as 1950DA’s rotation accelerated due to YORP effect. This effect results in a change of the rotation rate of an asteroid (either faster or slower), and is caused when the Sun heats up an object unevenly, due to asymmetric surface topography. As the heat escapes, the rotation rate is slowly changed due to an uneven rate of cooling. The researchers find that a rubble-pile asteroid may have a high rotation rate, if it is held together by cohesive forces between the grains. But as the spin rate increases due to YORP effect, the centrifugal force may cause the rubble pile to eventually separate as it happened with P/2013 R3.

The findings may have implications for asteroid impact avoidance. A very small impulse may break one potentially hazardous object into several pieces. As Ben Rozitis said: “You’d want to avoid interacting with the asteroid directly. An alternative is to use a ‘gravity tractor,’ or a heavy spacecraft placed near the asteroid, which uses the force of gravity to pull the asteroid off course”. Bong Wie, an aerospace engineer at Iowa State University in Ames, noted: “I just hope that an asteroid on a collision course with Earth will not be spinning rapidly and it will not be a rubble-pile asteroid”.

According to Daniel Scheeres, an aerospace engineer at the University of Colorado, Boulder, understanding such cohesive forces may also be important for future asteroid mining. Ben Rozitis clarified: “Mining missions intend to visit small asteroids about 10 meters (33 feet) or less in size, as it is thought that they are predominantly solid bodies. However, cohesive forces enable such small asteroids to be rubble piles instead. A small rubble-pile asteroid would be harder to interact with and collect, as it can easily deform or break up when subject to external forces.”

The study was supported by Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology and the NASA.

Ireland votes to overturn 35-year-old constitutional ban on abortion

Sunday, May 27, 2018

In the official result of Friday’s Irish referendum over the legality of abortion, referendum officer Barry Ryan announced yesterday 66.4% of voters favoured overturning the eighth amendment of the constitution. Introduced in 1983, the eighth amendment made abortion constitutionally illegal. Irish Taoiseach — Prime Minister — Leo Varadkar said supporting legislation, to be framed following the result of this referendum, is to be “enacted before the end of this year”.

More than 2.1 million people voted on the referendum on Friday. With a 64.1% turnout, 1,429,981 voted in favour of eliminating the abortion ban while 723,632 voted to keep it. The results were announced at Dublin Castle. About 6000 voters spoiled their votes. Calling it “an historic day”, Prime Minister Varadkar said it was “a great act of democracy.” Ministers said they would form laws allowing medical termination of pregnancy in the first trimester, twelve weeks, of pregnancy, and under special cases until the 24th week. The legislation is to be formed after discussion with medical experts.

Since the amendment, Article 40.3.3 of the Irish constitution, in 1983, which gave an unborn child equal rights to life as the mother, hundreds of thousands of women traveled to different countries for the medical termination of pregnancy, while some used medical drugs illegal in Ireland to terminate the pregnancy.

“Savita Matters, Women Matter” was one of the slogans used by the supporters who wanted to repeal the amendment. In October 2012, a 31-year-old dentist of Indian origin, Savita Halappanavar, died from sepsis at a Galway hospital after she was denied abortion for a protracted miscarriage. She was told by a midwife that termination of pregnancy would not be possible since Ireland was a “Catholic country”. Halappanavar’s photo was used for posters by supporters who wanted the 35-year-old amendment repealed. In 2016, the current Roman Catholic Pope, Pope Francis, described abortion as a “very grave sin” and a “horrendous crime”.

Halappanavar’s father Andanappa Yalagi told Hindustan Times, “We’ve got justice for Savita. What happened to her will not happen to any other family. I have no words to express my gratitude to the people of Ireland at this historic moment.” 39 of 40 Irish constituencies voted in favour of repealing the law, while voters in only one constituency, Donegal, voted against — 51.87% opting to keep the anti-abortion laws. After the result was announced, the crowd were chanting Savita’s name in front of Dublin Castle.

Cora Sherlock, an anti-abortion activist, said, “what we voted on today is the ending of human life.” “I will accept the will of the Irish people, at the same time I will make it very clear what I feel of the campaign that has taken place. We will now regroup and find out what our next move is”, she added. Another activist, David Quinn, said, “The result today is basically a reversal of the 1983 result. On that occasion the defeated side did not simply slip away.”

“The people have said that we want a modern constitution for a modern country”, Prime Minister Varadkar said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later congratulated Varadkar on Twitter, saying: “What a moment for democracy and women’s rights.”

Alfa One Corporation Accounting Solutions: Top Social Media Scams To Avoid In 2016}

Alfa One Corporation Accounting Solutions: Top social media scams to avoid in 2016

by

timothygates

Alfa One Corporation Accounting Solutions claims that the personal, especially the financial information of a person are not 100% secured online. Experts reveal that in the past few years, the number of phishing attempts on social networking sites has exploded to more than a hundred percent.

To hide their identity, fraudsters often blend in with the crowd and use social media to target a lot of people. They take advantage of the way people use social media by mimicking users and their activities to deal with business matters. Alfa One Corporation reviewed some studies and found out that the following are the most common scams on social media sites today.

Fake customer service accounts

This deceitful scheme often happens on Twitter. Criminals who reside online can phish the financial and other sensitive data of their victims by creating fake customer service accounts. Their usernames may seem identical to the genuine ones, but note that there are usually some characters that do not match or does not belong to the original one. Look for an extra underscore or other keyboard characters.

One example of this scheme is that when a real customer tweets at a major bank, the fraudsters will divert the conversation by replying to that tweet with an answer that seems authentic. And intercept the tweet with a link to a fake support site that attempts to steal the customer’s actual banking account details.

Fake comments

Well, this could be done by anyone, but scammers have different motifs behind and often done on popular posts. It’s apparent that a well-liked social media post or news story will generate a lot of comments and the scammers will take advantage of that. They will pretend to be an ordinary Facebook user and will comment on posts with links that could catch the interest of many that often leads to a credit card phishing scam.

Fake discounts

Some online discounts are bogus and this scheme is somewhat similar to fake customer service accounts. Scammers will create social media accounts that are identical to real businesses and pretend to offer real deals and discounts, and then steal your personal and financial information.

Fake live-stream videos

Live-streaming appears to be a trend nowadays and a lot of media companies began streaming their shows and movies online. Through this, scammers find a new way to find possible targets and carry out financial phishing scams. For example, they usually offer a link to a free live stream and many people will tend to believe them and not knowingly, becomes a victim of an evil scheme. In this tactic, the link will take you to a fake website and demands you to provide your personal information in order to begin the live-stream.

Fake surveys and contests

Not all online surveys and contests available on the web are real. Scammers can mine and sell your personal data by doing surveys and contests that require you to provide your credentials through personal questions. Scammers use the comment section on social media sites to target as many people as possible with fake online surveys and quizzes that steal personal information. They often embed them into social media posts and often look legit because of URL shorteners and there’s also a normal looking profile picture. Be aware of a comment that goes something like this: “What’s your opinion? We’d like to know! Participate in our research surveys and enter to win prizes!

Alfa One Corporation always strives to give people important warnings about scammers on social media sites. The firm wants you to remember that the only one responsible for your own safety is yourself. Not every post you see on the internet is real, so be cautious all the time.

Protesters arrested at anti-Scientology event in Atlanta

Sunday, March 16, 2008

While protesting outside the Scientology Church of Georgia in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, two members of the group Anonymous were arrested by DeKalb County riot police while standing opposite the Church of Scientology-owned building.

The two protesters, who earlier participated in the delivery of a ‘global speech’ collaboratively written and read by members of Anonymous at protests worldwide, are believed to have been charged by Dekalb police for protesting without a permit and causing ‘offensive or hazardous conditions’. However, other members of Anonymous who took leading roles in arranging the protest are adamant that the Dekalb police had previously told them they did not need a permit to protest.

The arrests were filmed by other members of Anonymous who subsequently posted the videos onto popular video-sharing website YouTube. The videos show a very quick arrest in which the arresting officers did not read the Miranda rights of the protesters, which—contrary to popular belief—is only required to be read before a police officer interviews someone in custody. This was confirmed by other members of the group who say they didn’t hear their rights being read before they were led away. “They were grabbed and taken behind the complex in one swift strike. There was no Miranda rights read when they were initially grabbed” said one member of Anonymous interviewed by Wikinews.

In other videos published on YouTube, the same members of Anonymous were shown thanking police for their work and offering them some of the cake members of Anonymous had brought to the protest, shortly before they were arrested.

Members of Anonymous have composed an open letter to Dekalb’s Chief of Police, asking if such a show of police strength was really needed at a non-violent protest organised and attended mainly by college students and young Americans.

Drivers showing their support for the protesters by honking their car horns while driving past were followed by police bikes waiting in the Scientology building’s driveway and given tickets for violating noise ordinance laws. However, many members of Anonymous have voiced confusion over these tickets, as the honks of support were only 2-3 seconds in duration at most, and noise ordinance laws state a horn must be sounded for longer than 60 seconds to count as a violation of the law. When, after the arrests were made, the police started to adopt the policy of ticketing drivers who honked, members of Anonymous quickly raised “Do not honk” signs to drivers.

Both of the members of Anonymous have been released, one with a bail of $763.00. There are confirmed to be two charges standing against one. No information has been released from the police department at this point.

They did no wrong, and that building they were led into was reportedly the Scientology Org building.

Initial reaction from bloggers was generally critical of the arrests. Kalira of Doomfeller blog wrote: “This is UNACCEPTABLE. They did no wrong, and that building they were led into was reportedly the Scientology Org building. If the police—nay, the walking tanks, totally uncalled for with a peaceful protest—had them unmask inside … suffice it to say if they get harassed, there will be great big steaming piles of hell to pay.”

Scientology critic Jeff Jacobsen, who was interviewed by Wikinews on February 19, wrote on his blog: “But then I see that the Atlanta police arrested two Anons, and were even stopping cars that honked in approval of the protest! Is Atlanta not a part of the United States? I don’t get it.”

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.
