Space Shuttle Discovery lands in Florida

Sunday, March 29, 2009

The space shuttle Discovery landed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Saturday, ending its thirteen-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The spacecraft’s landing was delayed for two hours due to low-lying clouds and heavy winds.

Discovery had been sent out to the ISS in order to install a new set of solar panels that would increase its power supply.

“Welcome home, Discovery, after a great mission to bring the International Space Station to full power,” said an astronaut, George Zamka, radioing from the mission control center in Houston, Texas.

NASA tested an experimental tile under the Discovery’s left wing during its approach for landing. The tile was almost eight centimetres thick, and had a bump in it, intended to disturb the otherwise smooth airflow over the shuttle’s wing, thus exposing it to high amounts of heat. Engineers installed the tile in order to measure the excess heat that was generated on downstream tiles. A military airplane monitored the heat with an infrared camera. The findings will be used to help determine better designs for future shuttles.

The Rules Of Life Insurance Policy Delivery

By Dennis Jarvis

So what happens when you’re approved for a life insurance plan that you applied for? The good news is that you’re approved. We now go into the phase known as policy delivery. There are some important tips to remember here and although each carrier is a little different in their requirements (we’ll help you with your particular life insurance company), some common threads run through them. Let’s look at how life insurance policies are delivered.

First, it’s important to understand how the life insurance contract works. When you submit your application, this is called the “offer”. Essentially you are making an offer to the carrier based on your pertinent information for a given rate. The carrier then decides whether to accept, decline, or change this offer (i.e. change the rates). At this point, the carrier will deliver you a policy. You do not officially have coverage until you return this policy back with your confirmation of its terms. This is important. You do not want to go through the entire application, paramedical exam, and underwriting process only to delay or possibly void the life insurance coverage due to mishandling this final confirmation. Let’s look at what is generally acknowledged and confirmed by you after policy delivery.

Common requirements for you, the applicant:

1) Acknowledgement of premium assigned. You need to confirm the rate that has been offered. Keep in mind, it might be different than original due to health status, paramedical, and underwriting results.

2) Acknowledgement of effective date or a request to update new effective date. This is important since effective date dictates when your coverage (and your payment) starts.

3) Contract policy review with agent for understanding of terms. Make sure to go through any question or contract terms with us as your licensed life insurance agent.

4) Copy of your application enclosed with policy. Keep this for your record.

5) Deadline for receipt of signatures. This is very important to make sure your policy goes into effect. You must return the signed contract by this date.

6) Premium payment (can be check, or electronic auth.) if not already submitted. Auto deduction and/or credit card can be a safer way to pay since there’s no “lost in the mail” scenarios that can jeapardize your coverage.

7) Premium modal frequency decision verified. This is where you decide to pay annually, quarterly, monthly, etc. Your premium modal can affect your rate (with shorter periods being more expensive)

8) Acknowledgement of policy delivery signature. You are acknowledging that you did in fact receive the policy.

9) Tax certification- some carriers want you to verify whether or not you are subject to backup witholding due to underreporting of interest or dividends.

10) Age change- if youve had an age change during the process, instructions are provided. You may/may not be able to lock premium rate by keeping effective date prior to birthday. Please contact if you’re straddling two ages so we can find the best rate and value.

The main take-away is that there is a time constraint. You can’t set this policy info aside and get to it in a few weeks or assume you were approved and therefore, have coverage. You have to acknowledge and confirm with the carrier once the policy is received and do so before the deadline. We can help with this process and in fact, we are an integral part of helping you successfully navigate your life insurance policy delivery.

Deadly fire below US President’s Trump Tower residence

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

On Saturday, the Trump Tower, in Midtown, New York City, caught fire shortly before 18:00 EST (2200 UTC) on the 50th floor, claiming the life of a 67-year-old resident, Todd Brassner, who lived in apartment 50C. All other residents were evacuated without incident. During the fire, six firefighters received non-life-threatening burns and other minor injuries. Neither US President Donald Trump nor the First Family were in the building at the time of the fire.

The high-end Fifth Avenue address is the personal residence of President Donald Trump, whose family occupies the top three stories of the 58-story building. The US Secret Service maintains a constant security presence inside the building with the New York City Police Department guarding a hard perimeter, intended to stop vehicular attacks, and a soft perimeter, intended for on-foot attacks.

The four-alarm fire required 200 firemen, extra police, and paramedics. At 20:00 EST (0000 UTC Sunday), the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) declared the fire was under control. Trump tweeted, “Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” This is the second fire at Trump Tower since the election; previously on January 8, a fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a cooling tower on the roof. Three FDNY firefighters received minor injuries, and all residents and office workers evacuated without incident on that occasion.

Trump Tower provides a number of unique problems never before encountered by the Secret Service. Never has a US President’s personal residence been inside a skyscraper or in a densely populated area like Midtown. The security measures have disrupted vehicular and pedestrian traffic requiring time consuming detours and delaying emergency response.

The New York Fire Code did not mandate sprinkler systems at the time Trump Tower was built in 1983, which might have reduced the size and severity of the fire had they been present. The 50th-floor apartment was, according to FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, “[T]he apartment was virtually, entirely on fire.” The Secret Service monitors all the fire alarms in the building but it took time to find the source of the thick black smoke emanating from the fire. Secret Service Agents escorted the firefighters throughout the building, including the Trump residence.

Brassner, the sole casualty, was unconscious when firefighters pulled him out of apartment 50C. He was transported to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital. Originally listed as critical, he was pronounced dead sometime during the night. Brassner, guitar collector, was acquainted with artist Andy Warhol and was acknowledged in Warhol’s 1989 autobiography, The Andy Warhol Diaries. The cause of the fire is unknown, with investigations into Brassner’s death and the emergency response ongoing. Currently, the Secret Service leads the investigation.

Dresdener Elbe Valley becomes UNESCO World Heritage site

Saturday, June 25, 2005

Since July 2, 2004 the Elbe Valley near Dresden has been in the process of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Friday saw the hand over of the documents in Castle Albrechtsberg confirming the status. Today, mayor Roßberg and Professor Bandarin will unveil a plaque in the church of Loschwitz – starting the Elbe Valley celebrations.

The cultural landscape consists of an 18 km long strip along the Elbe between Soebrigen and the Dresden bridge Flügelwegbrücke. It includes the ancient city of Dresden, the many castles along the river Elbe, the town centres of the small villages near the river as well as the very famous Castle Pillnitz.

The city of Dresden sees the status as an internationally-effecting advertisement for investors and tourists in the acknowledgment as a site of world heritage. By this status it will give no further restrictions for the UNESCO. The possibility “of a developing culture landscape” granted itself.

Bucharest to be ‘rebranded’ for 800 million euro

Wednesday, March 2, 2005

Bucharest, Romania — The city centre of Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is set to get a major facelift due to a real estate project called Esplanada (The Esplanade), which will be constructed by TriGranit Development Corporation. The total investment in the project will be greater than 800 million euro and aims to build a modern commercial pedestrian area in downtown Bucharest, with several shopping malls, office buildings, hotels and dwellings. It will be the largest real estate program in Romania since the fall of Communism in 1989.

Bucharest is currently looking at possibilities to improve its appearance and rebrand itself as a lively, creative and vibrant city. Many initiatives have sprung up to improve the city, including the organisation of CowParade later this year. Additionally, the old town centre will be restored. Due to Romania’s current economic boom, several other major construction projects are taking place.

Bucharest City Hall has blocked traffic in the city center due both to the old town restoration and to the Esplanada project.

Ask The Warrior Dentist: What Tools Do Dentists Use?

By Dr. Susan Wells

Dentists are trained to use a variety of different tools in the care of treatment of their patient s teeth. Perhaps the most important of these tools is the dentist s own talent for manual dexterity, which is the ability to skillfully and adroitly use the hands and fingers. Dentists must be able to accurately manipulate their fingers and the instruments and tools held in their hands while working inside a patient s mouth. Often they do not have the luxury of space, and they also have to be able to see with the help of mirrors. Imagine trying to thread a needle with your hands inside a cereal box, using nothing but the reflection from a small hand-held mirror to help guide your procedure. That gives you some idea of how dentists work, and helps to underscore the importance of natural tools like hands, fingers, and manual dexterity.

Dental mirrors are a major tool in dentistry, and so are bright lights. We often overlook these very simple tools, but without them the dentist would literally be in the dark and unable to see what he or she was doing inside the cavern of the mouth. Dentists use a variety of different mirrors and high intensity lamps as an integral part of their toolkit. They also use safety tools, to protect their own health and the health of their clients. These include eye protection and latex gloves, plus newer dental dams which were introduced within the past 10-15 years in all dentist offices. The dental dam is a rubber device fitted over the patient s mouth, and it helps to protect transmission of disease through contact with blood when the dentist is performing a surgical procedure.

The tools more commonly associated with dentistry are, of course, those that include drills, hypodermic needles, picks, and scrapers. Anytime a dentist needs to administer medicine or painkiller with an injection he or she uses a typical hypodermic needle. When drilling is required because the teeth are the hardest substance in the human body high speed drills that are specially designed to fit into small places are used. Lots of scissors of various shapes and sizes are used during dental surgery to cut gums or nerves, and other tools are used to clean out crevices in the teeth or gums and remove harmful infections and bacteria.

An excavator which is like a tiny spoon is one of these tools used to remove decay. Once the cavity is cleared and cleaned, the dentist will use an amalgam plugger device to push the new filling into place. Dentists also use instruments called curettes to poke around the gum line and check for disease. They use scaler tools to scrape away plaque and debris that may have accumulated on the surface of the tooth, and of course one of the most important tools in the dental office is the toothbrush. Dentists use high-tech electric toothbrushes to clean and polish the surface of the teeth and give us brighter and whiter smiles.

Manitoba’s flood creating hazardous conditions

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

The Red River at Winnipeg is almost clear of ice blocks and ice jamming, however there are still dangers from the Red River flood.

Ice blocks which were as high as two storey buildings were ripping out trees, fences and railway ties. “You’ll see huge pans of ice standing vertical, up to 20 feet (6.1 m) high,” said Steve Topping, an official with the provincial Water Stewardship Department. “Ice was shoved up on the shore and took out trees with a very devastating effect. It has changed people’s view of the river.”

“It is incredible, the force. One piece of ice pushed out of the river about 20 feet. You watch the force push this up right in front of your eyes,” said Dean North, of the Selkirk Golf and Country Club.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police are ticketing sight seers who are driving through road closure signs and approaching excavators, cranes and crews breaking up the ice. Vehicles, people, boats, and kayaks are getting in the way.

An eight year old boy is in critical condition after slipping on a culvert Thursday. He was pulled underwater by the speed of the flowing water and remained under for about five to ten minutes until adults could rescue him. The air ambulance supplied by Alberta’s STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) remains in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“This is not a spectator sport. It’s not about getting the best pictures for the family albums. I know floods are seen as a bit of an event, but some of the instances I’m hearing about, people should give their head a shake, they really should,” said Steve Ashton Manitoba Emergency Measures Minister, “Those who fall into the river or get into trouble in another way would be not only endangering themselves but the emergency response crews trying to rescue them. I don’t want to see a situation … where we’re trying our darndest to prevent flooding and save lives and somebody [who] decides to go have a white-water experience ends up killing themselves.”

Early Easter Sunday morning floodwater reached the rural municipalities of St. Andrews and St. Clements north of Winnipeg. Residents were sent an evacuation advisory Good Friday, however some residents remained. Rescue efforts commenced Saturday night to find those stranded and unable to leave as their vehicles cannot travel in the swollen overland floodwaters. Some people were rescued from roof tops as entire houses were swept off of their foundations by the large ice blocks hurtling down the river.

Highways in the area remain closed. Neil Gobelle, of Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation said to “definitely continue to watch the Red River Valley and north of the city up in the Selkirk area. Things are changing quite a bit, quite quickly, so we’ll keep an eye on those areas.”

As of Easter Sunday, Winnipeg is expected to be ice free on the Red River. The River rose 4 feet (1.2 m) in the course of 24 hours. Rain is in the forecast and the higher temperatures of 17 °C (62.6 °F) will cause melting of snow and ice.

A weather system caused by La Niña is being watched by the United States National Weather Service and its potential effects between April 16-18 for residents along the Red River Valley. “We want people to be aware there is a very real possibility of the river going higher than what is out there,” said Mark Ewens, data manager at the NWS, “To have spring floods like this back-to-back is just an unfortunate series of events that have come along to plague us this spring. We’re wanting people to understand that this is a potentially serious problem.”
