Ford’s US auto sales spike, surpassing GM

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Ford Motor Company said on Tuesday that its sales in the United States rose 43% in February compared to the same period last year, as the automaker outsold rivals Toyota and General Motors.

The strength of our new products … are resonating with customers

Ford said that total sales improved to 142,285 units, compared to 141,951 units sold by GM. Additionally, Ford said that its share of the total US car market rose to 17%, up from 14% a year ago. The increase was better than analysts had predicted, and Ford’s stock rose to a five-year high in morning trading, before declining later in the day. Ford’s sales were significantly influenced by a 74% increase in fleet sales to businesses. Rental car agencies alone accounted for around 30,000 units sold. Sales to retail consumers increased only 28%.

The increases were led by sales of two sedans, the Fusion and Taurus, which rose 166.5 and 93.3% respectively, although sales of other models such as SUVs and pickup trucks also increased. Both models were significantly redesigned last year, and analysts said that improved quality from such cars were driving the increases.

Other companies also reported February sales today, nearly all reporting sales gains as well, although none as large as those of Ford. Toyota was the sole exception to the sales gains, as their sales declined 8.7%, as the company was faced with a global recall during the month that led to a temporary stoppage of production for some models.

“The strength of our new products … are resonating with customers,” said Ken Czubay, Ford’s vice president of sales and marketing. However, he believed that traditional Toyota customers were not buying rival autos, but rather awaiting the results from the recalls.

How Reliable And Efficient Are Smart Cars Compared To Other Models In The Same Field?

How reliable and efficient are Smart cars compared to other models in the same field?

by

Essence Harold

This is not a huge concern these days as most car manufacturers have just gone through a bidding war, offering longer and longer warranties. Yet it is important to know that Smart models have been developed to be a high standard of reliability.

So if this is something you are concerned about then here is a selection of reasons why Smart models are durable, completed with a little help from www.carleasingspecialoffers.net:

For so many drivers, efficiency is a fundamental measure to take into account when choosing a car and in this respect a Smart is a great option. Smart cars are incredible economical to drive, which means they’ll hold up well if you’re taking regular long distance trips. Smarts are perfect for the everyday driver, as they are built with functionality in mind which means that you can drastically cut back on the amount of fuel you use at the pump, particularly compared to other similar vehicles. This is just one of the factors that have contributed towards the Smart being a best-seller for its type. As a result, they are perfect for everyday driving around, such as for getting around the town, making the daily commute or dropping the kids off at school.

With a new Smart you get a car with modern and stylized interiors, with smooth surfaces and flash colours. The display panel is brightly lit and easily visible and the fabrics and upholstery are of immense quality. There is also a stereo system and easy to use control panel, which is ideal for the modern driver. Interiors are also easy to clean, making them perfect for young drivers or people with children. The stylish and practical design of Smart cars, as well as the other aspects mentioned in this article, makes Smart cars perfect for professional, young and modern drivers that do a lot of city driving.

Smart engines can offer you making it eco-friendly. This technology has been developed over the last few decades to provide an alternative to the gas consuming engines and cars of the seventies and eighties, this means that driving a Smart is a lot more efficient. You will therefore be cutting down on the amount of fuel that you use and you could save a lot of money over the course of the year. As a result Smarts are perfect for people who drive often particularly commuters.

Smart cars are really quick and clear to use mainly because of the extremely low power to weight ratio. They are really full of excellence for speed acceleration and city roving, making them ideal for commuters or for regular trips into the city centre. The speed and power of the engine which Smart motors are adept at ensures that the firm has gained a reputation for making quick, simple to manoeuvre cars which are superbly built for negotiating any of the hazardous travelling conditions you may encounter. This perhaps explains why Smart leasing at www.carleasingspecialoffers.net is such a prime choice with university leavers and young families.

When driving a Smart you can’t help but notice how smooth it runs, as it seems to flow along the street effortlessly. This may explain why it is so efficient, or at least more efficient than some cars, as it is very economical to run. All of this means that you appreciate getting comfortable in the driving seat and taking your Smart out for a ride, irrespective of whether it is to a bustling shopping complex or your job base. What’s more they handle excellently giving you a steady control and practical grip on the tarmac. For this reason the driving of Smart cars makes them unique in the market.

Most drivers prefer to choose a car that is both practical and functional as they want to make sure that they feel entirely at ease in their car. Design is an absolutely crucial element in creating a car that will perform not only functionally but in terms of performance and comfort. Due to this, the engineers at Smart have pulled out all the stops to improve the functionality of their cars, choosing to create a car that the modern driver will appreciate. Smart cars have all taken into account the needs of the everyday driver, for instance, they might have more room in the boot for luggage or extra child safety features. Cars in the Smart range are great for those looking to make everyday errands and commute.

Hopefully you now have a better idea of the features that make Smart models so reliable and you should therefore know whether they are ideal for your own personal driving needs.

China offers Africa financial aid including $10 billion in loans

Sunday, November 8, 2009

China has offered Africa concessional loans worth US$10 (€6.5) billion as part of a host of new measures aimed at improving the economy of African nations. The announcement was made at the opening of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Leaders of nearly 50 African countries are attending the two-day conference.

China had already stated today at the 3rd Conference of Chinese and African Entrepreneurs, held immediately before the FOCAC, that Chinese firms would be encouraged to invest in Africa, while both sides would work together to improve the tourism, telecommunications and finance industries. China also said that governments should work with businesses to ensure co-operation between China and Africa.

As well as the loans, made over three years, China will write off the debt of Africa’s poorest countries, build 100 African green energy facilities and systematically lower import duties on 95% of all African products exported to China. Another promise is a loan of one billion dollars aimed at small and medium sized businesses in Africa. There will also be efforts to promote each other’s culture and increased medical assistance to Africa. Medical assistance comes in the form of 500 million yuan (US$73.2 million) of goods for the 60 hospitals and malaria centers China has already built, as well as 3,000 doctors and nurses. Roads will also be improved.

China also plans to assist with satellite weather monitoring, to help combat desertification and work within the urban environment, all aimed at reducing global warming. The new energy facilities will focus on solar, biogas and small-scale hydroelectrical installations. Another new measure is a promise to aid African farmers to ensure the continent is fed, increasing the number of demonstrations of agricultural technology in Africa to 20 and sending 50 teams of agricultural technology experts to the continent. Training in agricultural technology will be provided to 2,000 people.

“The Chinese people cherish sincere friendship toward the African people, and China’s support to Africa’s development is concrete and real,” said co-chair Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao as the FOCAC opened up, adding “Whatever change that may take place in the world, our friendship with African people will not change.” He described this friendship as ‘unbreakable’. Two years ago China pledged US$5 (€3.37) billion at the last FOCAC in Beijing and now, according to Jiabao, “China is ready to deepen practical cooperation in Africa.”

We want more investment from China

China has fulfilled its 2006 pledge, investing a total of US$7.8 (€5.26) billion in Africa last year alone. 49 African countries are represented at the FOCAC, which was created in 2000, although Jiabao noted that relations between China and Africa go back fifty years. China had already forgiven or reduced the debt for thirty nations at that FOCAC summit.

According to Chinese state-owned paper China Daily, trade between China and Africa increased by 45% last year, to give a total value of US$107 (€72.1) billion, a tenfold increase since 2001 and up from US$491 (€331) million in 2003. The Chinese have a 9.8% market share, the largest of any nation, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. China has paid for schools, hospitals, malaria clinics and Chinese scholarships for African students. 50 more schools are to be built and 1,500 people trained to staff them.

Since 2006 Chinese energy firms have committed to spend at least US$16 (€10.8) billion securing African oil and gas. China’s Sinopec Group, an oil giant, bought up Addax Petroleum Corporation from its Swiss owners that year, gaining control of oilfields in Nigeria, Cameroon and Gabon. China promised earlier this year to spend US$9 (€6) billion on infrastructure in the Congo in exchange for mineral deposits for mining operations.

Jean Ping, leader of the African Union, said the told those at the conference that the money is coming at an opportune time, because African growth was “totally compromised” by the global financial crisis. Ping said one of the lessons learned is that the world is paying for “the irresponsible and lax behavior” of large financial companies whose philosophy was to make short-term profits.

We thank China particularly for backing efforts by our countries to achieve peace and stability in Africa’s zones of conflict

Not all Africans are happy with China’s increasing involvement in their continent. Trade practices are a concern for some, with a view that China exploits Africa for raw materials before selling back finished goods. Among these are Egyptian Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid. Egypt is the richest nation in the Middle East and is discussing this perceived issue with China. Rachid told Bloomberg “What is a worry for me is if competition is unfair. That is where we are unhappy.” Jiabao described the trade as being based on “win-win programmes… and transparency.”

Others in Africa are delighted with the situation. “We want more investment from China,” Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete told the forum. Egypt’s own President Hosni Mubarak talked of “peace, security and growth,” and of “boosting cooperation between China and Africa.”

Jiabao also used his speech to respond to criticisms that China worked with nations regardless of their human rights record, such as Sudan, whose President Omar al-Beahir is wanted on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. “Africa is fully capable of solving its own problems, in an African way,” he said, adding that “China has never attached any political strings […] to assistance to Africa.”

Beshir thanked China in a speech for diplomatic work in Sudan, including working to defuse the Darfur conflict, which the United Nations says has left 300,000 dead. “We express our deep appreciation for China’s efforts in backing the comprehensive peace agreement in Sudan and its peace efforts in Darfur,” he said, referring to a peace deal between the northern and southern parts of his country. “We thank China particularly for backing efforts by our countries to achieve peace and stability in Africa’s zones of conflict.” Jiabao said China was willing to work towards “the settlement of issues of peace and security,” in Africa.

A further criticism has been that China has brought in Chinese workers and used their own knowledge, instead of training locals. Jiabao’s speech indicated an intention to co-operate better in the fields of science and technology, as well as improve training for African students on technical courses.

“Why do some only criticise China?” asked Jiabao. “Is this a view representing African countries, or rather the view of Western countries?”

US Representative Elijah Cummings dies at age 68

Friday, October 18, 2019

Early yesterday morning, United States Representative Elijah Cummings died while in hospice care. Cummings, the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, was 68.

Elijah Eugene Cummings, first elected to Congress in 1996, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1951. His parents, Robert Cummings Sr. and Ruth Elma Cummings, were sharecroppers. In grade school, Cummings expressed intent to become a lawyer. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science from Howard University, he attended law school at the University of Maryland. Cummings passed the state bar exam in 1976, and went on to start his own law practice.

In 1982 Cummings successfully ran to be a state delegate, joining the Maryland General Assembly in 1983. He remained there for fourteen years, eventually serving as the speaker pro tem of the chamber. Cummings was the first African American to hold that office.

When Representative Kweisi Mfume of Maryland’s seventh Congressional District announced his resignation in 1995, Cummings joined the race to replace him, winning the election. He went on to serve in the House of Representatives for twenty three years. He was among the Representatives who voted against the Iraq War in 2002, and in 2003 and 2004 served as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. He was also a member of the United States House Select Committee on Benghazi.

Following Democratic victories in the 2018 midterm elections, Cummings became the chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. In that role, Cummings oversaw the committee’s impeachment inquiry into President Trump, alongside the House Foreign Affairs and Intelligence committees.

The Baltimore Sun reported Cummings had been sick and was missing from Capitol Hill; his last roll call vote was on September 11. At 2:45 a.m. local time (0645 UTC), his office said, he died at Gilchrist Hospice Care. In a statement, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, his wife and the current chairwoman of the Maryland Democratic Party, said Cummings “worked until his last breath”.

In response to Cummings’s death, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, ordered the Capitol’s flags be lowered to half staff. Flags at the White House were reportedly similarly lowered.

Politicians from across the political spectrum publicly mourned Cummings’s death. Democrat Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, told MSNBC Cummings “was a great man,” while Republican President Trump noted his “strength, passion and wisdom” on Twitter.

Representative Carolyn Maloney, the most senior Democrat on the Oversight and Reform Committee, has stepped into Cummings’s role as the committee’s acting chair. As of yesterday evening, the process to select the next permanent chair had not yet been announced, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Under Maryland state law, Republican Larry Hogan, the current governor, has until October 28 to release plans for a special election to fill Cummings’s congressional seat.

Failings identified in response to Iranian seizure of Royal Navy personnel

Tuesday, June 19, 2007

Two inquiries into the seizure of Royal Navy personnel by Iran in March 2007 have found that the capture was not a result of “a single failure or any particular individual’s human error, but rather of an unfortunate accumulation of factors” and that there was a “collective failure of judgement” in allowing those involved to receive payment for discussing the event with the media.

The first report, by Lieutenant General Sir Rob Fulton, looked at “operational circumstances, consequences, and implications of the detention of the personnel”. The second, by Tony Hall, former BBC Director of News and now Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House, examined the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) handling of the media attention in relation to the incident and has been published on the MOD website. The report by General Fulton is not available to the public, as it is classified because it deals with operational issues.

General Fulton identified weaknesses in training, communications and the handling of intelligence and suggested improvements in training for boarding operations.

The Hall report found that the poor judgement in allowing members of the armed forces to talk to the media was not the failure of a single individual, but Defence Secretary Des Browne accepted this as his responsibility, and has apologised for this error. He said that personnel would not be allowed to sell their stories in future.

In a statement to Parliament, Des Browne said that the Ministry of Defence were committed to implementing the recommendations made in the reports and that he expects “the great majority to be implemented by the end of this year”.

The Need For Irrigation In Tasmania

The Need for Irrigation in Tasmania

by

Van Diemen

It cannot be denied that Australia is a predominantly large and dry country. Its climate varies significantly with geographic location. Despite such conditions, the country cannot solely rely on product importation for it to thrive. People have learned to adapt to the natural terrain and climate of the country through time. What nature gave in small amounts, its people more than made up for it by using innovative inventions and methods to further enrich what has been given to them. As a result, the agricultural industry in the country flourished. And though agricultural production in Australia is still limited by rainfall, additional water supply through irrigation has contributed a lot to increase productivity.

Australian trends in agriculture indicate that current rising industries include wine, cotton, horticulture and dairy. This is slowly challenging the traditional perception that wool, wheat and beef are Australia\’s largest export earners. In the state of Tasmania, crop types that include pasture and vegetables are the prime produce of the agriculture industry that mostly require water irrigation. To sustain such industry, people in the area invest heavily on highly modern irrigation equipment to meet their faming needs.

Irrigation expansion is mainly based on sustainable water supply in a region, the type of crop that needs irrigation and how much the financial investment the grower is willing to make. The mean annual runoff of Tasmania is 44,842 GL which shows that the territory s surface water is adequate for such expansion. This represents a significant water resource and meets the needs of the region in developing a viable irrigation industry that supports most of the state s power requirements. In addition, agriculture in Tasmania ranks along with forestry and tourism as one of its three major industries. In view of this, irrigation in the area is definitely a must and the people including the government itself rely heavily on sourcing their equipment from only the most reputable manufactures and suppliers.

A reliable source for such irrigation equipment in the Tasmanian region is Van Diemen\’s Land Irrigation Pty. Ltd. Located in Launceston, the company offers a whole range of products that include hard hoses, pump sets, irrigators such as travelling irrigators and generators among others. These kinds of equipment are considered necessities in Tasmania\’s highly diversified food and agricultural sector to maintain its reputable global standing as one of Australia s primary producers of the finest and cleanest products in the world.

In Tasmania, there are many different methods and systems of irrigation that are currently being used. However, spray irrigation particularly the centre pivot irrigation system is widely being used by farming communities in the region. Centre pivot irrigation requires an overhead sprinkler system consisting of several segments supported together by trusses. Many growers prefer pivot irrigation as crops receive water on a regular and consistent way. Secondly, water loss is minimized as drifting and evaporation in the air is likewise reduced. Overall, this move to more efficient irrigation practices is reflective of the global trend of increasing recognition that water resources are becoming scarcer and we must all do our part to conserve it in any way we come.

Pope visits homeland in Germany

Monday, September 11, 2006

Pope Benedict XVI went to visit his homeland in Marktl-am-Inn, Germany today. The Pope celebrated Mass in front of 70,000 people, at Kapellplatz square. Benedict had a six-day homecoming tour of his native Bavaria, a state in Germany. He said a prayer remembering 9/11 victims.

Benedict also planned to make visits to where he was born, and to Freising, where he was ordained a priest. He will also visit Regensburg, where he once taught theology; he still has a house in the city, and his brother Georg, a retired priest and choir director, lives there as well.

“This is the mother that generations have come to Altoetting to visit,” he said. “To her we entrust our cares, our needs and our troubles.”

He visited his first house, which he lived till he was two years old. The house had to be cleaned after it was spattered with blue paint early on Sunday. The police described it as vandalism.

“This is a really big thing — I’ve never seen a pope before,” said Juergen Tauer, a 38-year-old computer technician from the Bavarian town of Degendorf who took the day off to travel to Altoetting with his wife and three children. “It’s great that the pope is coming to Altoetting.”

Everyone was excited about the chance to see the pope.

Wikinews interviews candidate for New York City mayor Vitaly Filipchenko

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

In early May, Wikinews extended an invitation to Vitaly Filipchenko, an independent candidate in the 2021 New York City mayoral election, set to take place November 2nd, alongside other candidates. Filipchenko answered some questions about his policies and campaign during a phone interview.

Filipchenko, registered on the New York City Campaign Finance Board as Vitaly A. Filipchenko, is the first Russian candidate for New York City mayor, being born in Tomsk, Siberia in 1973, according to news agency Sputnik. He has since naturalised as a United States citizen. According to the web site, Filipchenko has been educated in road construction and maintenance and owns a moving services company; he describes himself on his web site as a “small business owner”. On his web site’s platform page, he says that “[m]y English may not be perfect – but my platform is.”

Incumbent Democrat mayor Bill de Blasio, who won re-election in the 2017 New York City mayoral election by 66.5%, cannot run for a third term under term limits. As of April 28, 22 candidates are currently running, the majority of whom are also Democrats. Ahead of the June Democratic primary for New York City mayor, a poll conducted May 23 and 24 by WPIX and Emerson College of 12 Democratic candidates with a margin of error of 3.2 per cent has former commissioner for the New York City Department of Sanitation Kathryn Garcia and Borough President of Brooklyn Eric Adams leading with 21.1% and 20.1%, respectively.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.
