The most important festival of people belonging to the eastern part of India, especially West Bengal, Durga Puja is known for its grandeur. Durga Puja extends over 3-4 days and calls for much revelry and merriment. While during the morning men and women get dressed in ethnic Indian Clothing such as Sarees and Kurta Pyjamas and participate in various pujas and the offering of flowers to goddess Durga known as Pushpanjali, the evenings are the time for everyone to get together for some fun and merriment with friends and family.

Being a traditional festival, Sarees are most preferred by Indian women for Durga Puja. Be it a young girl in her teens or much older women, during Durga Puja everyone is spotted in beautiful Indian Sarees

that are draped gracefully. Most of Bengali women usually choose the traditional white Saree with red borders for the morning rituals of Durga Puja and prefer to drape their Sarees in the traditional Bengali style of draping a Saree. Besides the handmade traditional Bengali Tant cotton Sarees, there is quite a demand for

traditional Silk Sarees

during Durga Puja as well. Silk Sarees evoke a majestic look that suits the magnificence of Durga Puja celebrations. Traditional Silk Sarees in rich shades of red, maroon, mustard yellow, teal, orange, etc are quite popular during Durga Puja. Silk Sarees for Durga Puja, however, do not feature overtly glamorous zari woven design as seen on Bridal or Wedding Silk Sarees but reveal woven pattern using resham or zari with a muted or a subtle sheen. This renders a subdued yet a classic appeal. Rather than pure Silk Sarees, during Durga Puja women prefer

Art Silk Sarees

, Silk Cotton Sarees, Crepe Silk Sarees, etc. featuring subtle zari woven pattern along the borders. These Silk Sarees are further enhanced with bold woven motifs or embroidered pattern using sequins, beads, zari and resham embroidered decorative pattern.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Ukraine opposition candidate Yushchenko is suffering from a Dioxin intoxication, doctors say

Saturday, December 11, 2004

VIENNA —Doctors from the Rudolfinerhaus clinic in Vienna say “there is no doubt” Ukrainian opposition leader Victor Yushchenko was poisoned with Dioxin.

Yushchenko’s body had about 1,000 times more than the normal concentration of the toxin. It is unknown if there were any other poisons in his system.

Although it has not yet been proven that the poisoning was deliberate, doctors suspect it was. “We suspect a cause triggered by a third party,” said Michael Zimpfer, head doctor at the Rudolfinerhaus clinic. He suggested the poison may have been administered orally, through food or drink.

Today’s announcements are a follow-up of an earlier press conference, where Dr. Korpan that there were three hypotheses under consideration, one of them involving dioxin. He did not reveal what the other two hypotheses were. Dr. Michael Zimpfer, director of the Rudolfinerhaus clinic emphasized that time there was no proof yet to specify the substance causing the illness.

Yushchenko left Kiev on Friday (2004-10-12) for further examination in Vienna. When Yushchenko fell ill on October 6th, Ukrainian doctors had initially diagnosed food poisoning, leading to speculation that he had been poisoned deliberately. The illness has disfigured Yushchenko’s body and face which doctors say could take up to two years to heal.

He fell seriously ill on the September 6th, during his presidential campaign. Yushchenko was taken to the Rudolfinerhaus clinic of Vienna, where he stayed for four days under Dr. Korpan’s care. He was diagnosed with “acute pancreatitis, accompanied by interstitial edematous changes.” These symptoms were said to be due to “a serious viral infection and chemical substances which are not normally found in food products” as his campaign officials put it. In laymans terms, he developed an infection in the pancreas and got a bad skin condition that disfigured his face with cysts and lesions. The skin condition has similarities with the chloracne associated with dioxin posioning according to a British toxicologist John Henry.

Updating Kitchen Cabinets On The Cheap

By Carmen Fontana

It’s the age-old question: How cheap can I get it done? This query is one that is posed of everything from a major car repair to repaving of a driveway, and it’s one that’s become all the more pressing in today’s volatile economy.

It’s not surprising then that some readers of the ‘San Francisco Chronicle’ wanted advice on updating 1980s oak kitchen cabinets on the cheap. In a Q&A titled ‘Cheaper kitchen cabinet update needs DIY grease,’ the newspaper’s home expert offered several money-saving tips to these question-posing homeowners.

First, let’s set the scene. The existing kitchen cabinets have been stained dark walnut. Although they look outdated, they are in good shape. The homeowners don’t want to paint them because they ‘like a wood-grain look.’ The homeowners have come up with three ideas of their own:

1. Replace the existing cabinets

2. Reface the kitchen cabinets

3. ‘Refinish the cabinets, replacing the doors and drawers with updated unfinished wood, sanding the existing cabinets, then staining the cabinets and the new doors/drawers with a new color’

The expert advisor concedes that the homeowners have ‘identified all the viable options.’ Taking each one in turn, the author breaks each approach down into its overall cost to achieve the desired effect.

1. As far as replacing the existing kitchen cabinets, the answerer points out, ‘You’ll get exactly what you want. But if cost is an object, this is priciest.’ By doing it themselves, the homeowners also risk the possibility of breakage during that process, potentially increasing the cost.’ A leading provider of services that include the installation of building products can help get the job done right without incurring any extra costs.

2. At the middle ground, the homeowners have been quoted a price of between $26,000 and $30,000. Presuming that price tag includes new doors and drawer fronts, the answerer agrees that ‘the price seems dear.’

3. When it comes to the final option, ‘Refinishing is not only realistic but downright cheap compared with the first two options – especially if you undertake the heavy lifting yourself by at least stripping the carcasses.’ If you decide to go this route, consult with a reputable manufacturer of kitchen cabinets whose inventroy includes a selection of wood door styles, finishes, and decorative cabinet hardware. That way, you’ll be able to achieve the look of new kitchen cabinets without completely starting from scratch.

Don’t overlook the finishing details. ‘With all of the time and care you’ve invested in your cabinets, it would be a shame to reinstall their old, worn knobs, pulls and hinges,’ the expert stresses. ‘You can easily replace the old cabinet hardware with new items, giving the kitchen a fresh look.’

If low cost is the prime motivating factor behind a kitchen cabinet upgrade, then refinishing is clearly the way to go. ‘It will cost a lot of time but it will save you a bunch of money, and you’ll be repaid many times the cost when you see your work and think about the job well done,’ the article concludes.

Restrictions imposed in China textile trade with U.S.

Saturday, May 21, 2005

In an effort to ease complaints by the U.S. and Europe about a heavy influx of low priced Chinese goods, China will raise export tariffs on 74 categories of textile products in June. This follows plans from the U.S. to impose quotas on Chinese textiles and clothing.

Products likely to see an increase from the Chinese move include synthetic fiber shirts, trousers, knit shirts and blouses, cotton shirts, and combined cotton yarn. Last week, similar restrictions were imposed by the U.S. on cotton trousers, knit shirts, and underwear. Currently, a 2.5 cent charge per item is imposed; the new tariff will raise this to the equivalent of 12 cents per piece now. While this is a fourfold increase, it is not expected to affect consumer prices. Because of this, some doubt the tariff will have any effect on correcting the trade imbalance.

This move is in response to U.S. trade quotas imposed due to concerns that increased Chinese goods would put U.S. textile manufacturers out of business. According to Auggie Tantillo, executive director of the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition, a textile industry group in the U.S., the move will preserve 10,000 U.S. jobs. The new U.S. trade quota will limit the growth of Chinese textile imports to 7.5 percent compared with shipments over the past year.

Prior to January 1, a global quota system helped regulate the trade. With the quota system gone, fears have arisen that a flood of Chinese goods could undercut U.S. competitiveness in the market. China is able to market its goods cheaply due to an artificially weak yuan. The U.S. Treasury criticized the China yuan policy as “highly distortionary”, posing a major risk to China’s economy itself and to global economic growth. They challenged China to revalue its currency to bring it to a level they believe will allow fairer competition between global manufacturers.

China has disputed the charges of the U.S. Treasury. Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai said, “I believe they are not reasonable”.

Laura Jones, a representative of large retailers, also criticized the move, saying “These restrictions on imports from China will do absolutely nothing to help the U.S. textile industry — and the government knows it.”

China has seen a boom in economic growth in recent years due to growing trade surpluses with the West, but economists worry that the trade gap will cause longer term global economic problems. China’s textile and apparel exports are the most noteworthy example, with exports up over 1,000 percent in some categories this year and the rapid loss of marketshare and jobs by U.S. textile manufacturers.

Beginning in 1978, the Chinese economy has been transforming from a Soviet-style centrally planned economy to more of a free market style system, under the rigid political control of Communist Party of China.

To this end, the government has leveraged foreign trade to stimulate economic growth. The result has been a fourfold increase in GDP, making China the sixth largest economy in the world. By 2012 the People’s Republic of China may have the highest GDP in the world.

According to U.S. statistics, from 1999 to 2004 China’s trade surplus with the U.S. doubled to $170 billion. Wal-Mart is China’s seventh largest export partner, just ahead of the United Kingdom.

However, the gains from their “socialist market economy” have not been without problems. The Chinese leadership has often experienced the worst results of socialism and capitalism: bureaucracy, lassitude, corruption, and inflation. Inflation rates have been an on-going challenge, reaching as high as 17% in 1995.

Environmental deterioration is a longer-term threat to economic growth. In 1998, the World Health Organization reported that China had seven of the 10 most-polluted cities on Earth. Another concern among some economists is that China’s economy is over-heating, and due to its global economic expansion this could have major repercussions among other nations.

Typically, wages have been low and working conditions poor, with workers living in restrictive dormitories and working at boring factory jobs. However, recent labor shortages have started improving conditions, and raising the minimum wage towards the equivalent of 100-150 US dollars per month. The labor shortages are in part a result of a demographic trend caused by strict family planning.

The Best Ways To Deal With Anger

By IPRWire Staff Writer

Anger is an emotion that you feel when something irritates you. It can be just a small annoyance or full blown out rage. Your perception of anger was learned, in the form of beliefs and values that were instilled in you. Usually, in the early stages of your emotional development. When any of your beliefs or values are questioned or transgressed, you may feel anger. The degree of intensity depends on your state of mind at the particular time of the incident.

Your feelings of anger are either expressed, as in the form of arguing or physically lashing out, or suppressed. Suppressed anger causes negative emotions to dominate, which can lead to depression. It can also express itself as a physical ailment such as high blood pressure.

Expressing anger is said to be your better alternative. Although it may bring you some relief, it also has its downside. It may compound the problem and it can also affect you physically. One of the physical side effects is that it lowers your immune system. What would be one of the best ways to deal with anger?

Release. The first thing you need to do is to recognize and admit that you are angry. Never pretend you are not angry when you know you are. It is widely accepted that people who always want to be in control seem to suffer mostly from outbursts of anger. When you are angry, you will notice that you stop breathing periodically. You may tend to hold your breath, so keep breathing with intervals of deep breathing. Then, recognize the problem for what it is, and not for what you think it is. After all, you are dealing with somebody else’s beliefs and value system. Just tell yourself, they also have a right to express their opinions.

When you do get angry, much of the blood in your brain flows to the back of your head. It goes to the primitive part of the brain were it automatically prepares you for fight or flight. The frontal lobes of the brain (in the forehead are) are associated with thought, pleasure, creativeness, and calmness.

Simply put two fingers on one side of your forehead and your thumb on the other side, and just gently hold them there while breathing without any pauses. The blood will flow back to your frontal lobes, bringing about some calmness. When you feel relaxed and the issue or issues don’t not bother you anymore, release your finger and thumb from your forehead. And of course you can also apply this technique to someone else, and it is especially effective with infants.

Chinese President signs multiple trade deals with India

Thursday, September 18, 2014

On the second day today of a three day visit to India the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, has signed multiple economic deals with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.File:Xi Jinping October 2013 (cropped).jpg

China would set up two industrial parks in India, one in Gujarat and one in Maharashtra. The deals encompass Chinese investment of US$20 billion in infrastructure projects, modernisation of the Indian Railways, and agreements on trade, space exploration, and civil nuclear energy. China has also committed itself to opening its markets to Indian pharmaceuticals and farm products. A final settlement of the unresolved dispute over the Chinese–Indian border in the Himalayas is also to be sought; the dispute, over which the Sino-Indian War of 1962 was fought, arises over where the border should be.

In a message to Chinese journalists on Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Modi used the slogan “Inch towards Miles”, (standing for “India and China towards Millennium of Exceptional Synergy”) to express his hopes as to the future direction of the two nations’ bilateral ties. The Indian Prime Minister further emphasised the shared history and culture of the two nations which could be further enhanced for a brighter shared future.

The Chinese president’s visit comes amid tension over Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea, clashing with claims of several other countries, including Japan. In a five day visit to Japan in the beginning of this month, Modi said “The world is divided in two camps. One camp believes in expansionist policies while the other believes in development.” Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also came to an agreement which would see Japanese investment in India rise to US$33.6 billion in the next five years.

Another unresolved tension between the two nuclear powers India and China is continued Chinese support of India’s rival Pakistan.

Xi’s visit to India, which began yesterday following visits to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, is part of an initiative Xi likens to the creation of a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

Sarkozy says burqa is “not welcome” in France

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

The President of France Nicolas Sarkozy Monday, in a speech to a joint session of both houses of the Parliament of France, stated that the burqa “will not be welcome on the territory of the French Republic”.

Sarkozy’s address was the first such address by a President of France to the Parliament since 1873. Both houses met as the Congress of France in the Château de Versailles. It was permitted by a revision to the Constitution of France that was enacted in 2008. (Previously, rules based upon the doctrine of the separation of powers had prevented Presidents from addressing the Congress directly except in order to propose revisions to the Constitution.)

In the speech, which was boycotted by the Green and Communist parties, Sarkozy said that “We cannot accept, in our country, women imprisoned behind a mesh, cut off from society, deprived of all identity. That is not the French Republic’s idea of women’s dignity.” He stated that the burqa “is not a sign of religion, it is a sign of subservience.”

Sarkozy’s remarks come in the wake of his government proposing last week a Parliamentary commission to draft legislation barring the wearing of burqas by Muslim women outside of the home, and of calls by French parliamentarians, including GDR member André Gerin, and government ministers, such as Fadela Amara, for an inquiry into Muslim dress codes.

Sarkozy himself stated that he was calling for a public debate. “A debate has to take place and all views must be expressed.”, he said. “What better place than Parliament for this?”

Dalil Boubakeur, rector of the Great Mosque of Paris, stated that some Muslims themselves also believed the burqa to be a symbol of submission, and stated that Sarkozy’s remarks were “in keeping with the republican spirit of secularism”. He views the reported increase in the use of the burqa by Muslim women in France as a move towards radicalization of Islam in the country, and calls instead for an “open and convivial Islam that allows people to live side by side”.

Sarkozy’s remarks continue an on-going controversy about Islamic dress in France. Feelings run strong in France over what is called “laïcité” a concept, enshrined in the Constitution, that embodies components of secularism, separation of churches from the state, division of the private and public spheres, preventing the government endorsement of any single religion, and (according to its critics) anti-clericalism, religious intolerance, and the endorsement by default of erstwhile official religions at the expense of the religions of immigrant communities.

We must not fight the wrong battle.

Sarkozy called for the public debate to focus on these issues, and not to become a debate over Islam itself. “We must not fight the wrong battle,” he said. “In the Republic, the Muslim faith must be respected as much as other religions.”

France is home to Western Europe’s largest Islamic community, with some five million Muslims living there.
