Irrigation Systems And Equipment Used For Agriculture In Tasmania

Irrigation Systems and Equipment Used for Agriculture in Tasmania

by

Van Diemen

Tasmania is a largely agricultural area and is therefore very much in need of various irrigation systems and equipment for agriculture. Irrigation is the artificial distribution of water on soil. For agricultural purposes, irrigators are used in Tasmania to ensure proper water supply for crops, protecting crops against frost, minimizing weed growth in crop fields and assisting in the prevention of soil consolidation.

There are various systems such as surface, drip, sprinkler, centre pivot, lateral move, sub-irrigation and, of course, manual irrigation through human labor. The differences among these irrigation systems lie in the way in water is being distributed. In Tasmania, the more modern systems are available for agricultural concerns.

One of the oldest irrigation systems is surface irrigation which uses gravity aided by canals and dikes to guide water from a higher area toward specific lower areas. This is also often called flood irrigation since it can flood the areas being irrigated, as in the case of rice fields and rice terraces.

Drip irrigation or trickle irrigation concentrates the delivery of water to the roots of the crops, by the drop. This saves water because there is little, if any, runoff and evaporation. It can be done in very high-tech methods involving computerization although there are labor-intensive low-tech methods, as well.

Sprinkler, also called overhead irrigation, uses sprinklers, sprays or guns attached to an elevated structure over crops. Solid-set sprinkler systems use permanent structures in specific areas of the field, to which water is fed from a pump set through a system of pipes or hard hoses. Travelling irrigator systems differ from solid-set systems in that they are mounted on wheeled structures that could be moved through the field. Also considered a type of sprinkler irrigation system is the centre pivot irrigation system. This system has horizontal pipes to which sprinklers are attached. The set-up moves in a circular pattern from a pivot in the center to water a wide circular area. The central pivot also provides water to the sprinklers. Such centre pivot systems are widely used in Tasmania.

The North West Coast of Tasmania grows vegetables for processing and for the fresh market as well as tulips. The North and North East Coast of Tasmania grow vegetables for processing and has vineyards. The most common irrigation systems are travelling guns, centre pivots, linears, portable sprinkler systems and some usage of drip irrigation. The Central area of Tasmania grows potatoes and cereals. The most common irrigation systems are travelling guns, centre pivots and some surface irrigation. The South East area of Tasmania grows vegetables for the fresh market, specifically leafy greens for salads, and late season berries and stonefuit. The most common irrigation systems are travelling guns, centre pivots, mini sprinklers and drip irrigation.

For agricultural concerns, it would be crucial to have the most appropriate and efficient systems and equipment. Expert and experienced advice is needed in choosing the most fitting machinery and design for agriculture. Proper maintenance and repair would be an ongoing requirement, as well. In Tasmania, one of the most reliable sources would be Van Diemen’s Land Irrigation Pty Ltd.

Study says dogs can smell lung and breast cancer

Monday, August 7, 2006

Dogs can be trained to detect early and late stages of lung and breast cancer accurately according to a study published by California scientists in the little-known scientific journal Integrative Cancer Therapies.

The study took place over the last five years at the Pine Street Foundation, a non-profit organization which conducts evidence-based research on integrative medicine (combining complementary and alternative medicine and mainstream medicine). Michael McCulloch and colleagues used three Labrador Retrievers and two Portuguese Water Dogs, both common pets, that received basic behavioral dog training. The researchers trained the dogs to lie down next to a sample from a cancer patient and to ignore other samples.

The samples used were breath samples from 55 patients with lung cancer and 31 with breast cancer — the two types of cancer with the highest mortality rates in the United States.

After the training phase, the dogs’ accuracy diagnosis was tested in a double-blind experiment. Among lung cancer patients, the sensitivity and specificity were 99% accurate and for breast cancer sensitivity was 88% and specificity 98%. Because these figures seem almost too good to be true, cancer experts are the same time baffled and skeptical. The authors of the study themselves also say replication of the study is needed.

Importantly, this was independent of the cancer stage, meaning the dogs were able to pick up the scent of cancer in its early stages. This is important because in many cases, the success of any treatment depends on early diagnosis. However, the researchers don’t believe this will lead to the use of dogs in the clinic soon, rather they want to find out which chemicals are actually sensed by the canines, because they could be used in laboratory assays. “It’s not like someone would start chemotherapy based on a dog test,” Dr. Gansler of the American Cancer Society said, “They’d still get a biopsy.”.

The researchers were inspired by anecdotal reports about dogs detecting cancer. In 1989, a British women consulted with her family physician because her Dalmatian kept licking a mole on her leg. At biopsy it showed to be malignant melanoma. When diagnosed too late this form of cancer has a poor survival rate, but in this case early surgery was made possible, and the women survived. Prior studies showed that breath samples from patients with lung cancer or breast cancer contain distinct biochemical markers. This provides a basis for the hypothesis that some cancer types produce volatile chemicals that dogs could smell. A study published in the British Medical Journal already proved that dogs could use their exquisite sense of smell to detect bladder cancer in urine samples, but they were only correct in 41% of cases, and another study provided preliminary evidence that dogs could detect melanomas.

This doesn’t mean you can show your breasts to your dog and it will tell you if you have cancer, other physicians caution, and scientists do not advise people to train their dogs to sniff for cancer. Unresolved issues from the study include the fact that subjects were required to breathe deeper than normal, so it’s not sure whether dogs can smell cancer in normal breath. Also, whether this is a permanent skill that would be retained by dogs was not tested.

Finally, there are concerns that could arise over liability issues: who would be responsible when the dog makes a mistake?

Current detection methods for both lung and breast cancer are not flawless. For lung cancer, chest X-ray and sputum cytology (detecting cancer cells in coughed up fluid) fail to detect many early cases, and CT scan produces many false-positive results unless combined with expensive PET scans. Although it might be comparing apples and oranges, a $2.5 million CT scanner has an accuracy of 85 to 90%. Mammography also produces false-positive results, and it may be difficult in women with dense breast tissue. As such, another type of “pet”-scan, using dogs as a biological assay, might prove feasible for screening if supported by further research. Current tests are also expensive so the use of dogs for preliminary cancer testing could prove to be an affordable alternative for countries in the developing world.

Freman Hendrix eclipses Kwame Kilpatrick in Detroit mayoral race

Wednesday, August 3, 2005

Challenger Freman Hendrix has upset incumbent Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick in the August 2 Detroit mayoral primary election. The top two contenders will face each other in the general election on November 8. Kilpatrick, the youngest mayor in Detroit history, is seeking his second term.

The Detroit Free Press reports that with 664 of the city’s 720 precincts reporting (92 percent), Hendrix had 44 percent of the vote, Kilpatrick had 34 percent, City Councilwoman Sharon McPhail had 12 percent, and state Sen. Hansen Clarke had 9 percent. Eight also-rans accounted for the remainder of the vote.

The results closely agree with an exit poll by local TV station WDIV and Mitchell Research, which had challenger Hendrix as the winner with 46 percent of the vote, Kilpatrick with 30 percent, McPhail with 11 percent, while state Sen. Hansen Clarke rounded out the top four with 9 percent. Mitchell Research & Communication’s pollsters interviewed 600 people who said they voted. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

US Supreme Court judge Ginsburg undergoes surgery for pancreatic cancer

Thursday, February 5, 2009

United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 75, has undergone surgery for early pancreatic cancer today. The disease was spotted during a routine check-up. She is likely to be hospitalised for ten days.

“Justice Ginsburg had no symptoms prior to the incidental discovery of the lesion during a routine annual checkup in late January at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland,” the Supreme Court announced.

Ginsburg underwent sugery and had chemotherapy for colorectal cancer in 1999; her mother and husband also suffered from cancer.

She was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993, and is considered to be on the liberal wing of the nine-member court.

A spokesman for President Barack Obama said that Obama’s thoughts and prayers are with Ginsburg.

According to the American Cancer Society, the one-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 24%, and the five-year survival rate is 5%.

Multiple Applications Of Enzymes In Disease Diagnosis

Enzymes are biocatalysts produced by living cells in organisms, most of which are usually globular proteins. These enzymes can effectively catalyze various biochemical reactions and promote the metabolism of organisms under normal human conditions. Life activities such as digestion, absorption, breathing, exercise, and reproduction are all enzymatic reactions. Therefore, enzymes are the basis for cell survival.

There are many kinds of enzymes in the human body, and more than 3,000 enzymes have been discovered, such as pepsin, trypsin and other hydrolytic enzymes. The protein that the human body takes in from food must be hydrolyzed into amino acids under the action of pepsin. Under the action of other enzymes, more than 20 kinds of amino acids can be selected and then reorganized into various other proteins required by the human body. Many complex reactions occurred during the whole process. It can be said that without enzymes, biological metabolism will not continue, and the entire colorful biological community in nature will disappear. Now we know the importance of enzymes in organisms, which is why enzymes can be used for clinical diagnosis.

Blood Lipids Tests

Blood lipids refer to a group of fatty substances present in the blood, mainly including cholesterol and triglycerides. Cholesterol circulating in the blood usually comes in two forms: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). As LDL accumulates in the container, it may cause LDL to be “bad” and may cause blockage. High-density lipoproteins are called “good” because they help reduce bad cholesterol in the blood. Triglycerides come from food and are mainly used as energy sources. Abnormal blood lipid levels are usually associated with many diseases, such as hypertension, coronary arteries, hypothyroidism, type 2 diabetes, obesity, pancreatitis, etc. Enzymes involved in lipid metabolism have been extensively studied. Creative Enzymes provides a variety of enzymes for blood lipid test from different sources to help you in your research.

Liver Function Test

Liver function tests are essential for the early diagnosis of liver disease and the treatment of patients with liver dysfunction. A variety of enzymatic reactions have been developed to detect the presence of abnormal substances associated with different types of liver diseases or liver damage. Creative Enzymes has been supporting the clinical and research uses of liver function assessment through its diagnostic enzyme products.

Kidney Function Test

The main function of the kidneys is to remove waste and excess fluid from the blood by producing urine. The pancreas is responsible for the production of digestive enzymes and insulin. Early kidney and pancreas dysfunction did not show obvious symptoms, which may lead to severe dysfunction. Therefore, the early diagnosis of kidney and pancreas has attracted widespread attention. Since the chemicals, enzymes and other compounds secreted from the kidneys and pancreas are generally stable in quality and quantity, the abnormal presence of specific entities in the fluid or elevated levels of certain enzymes indicates an abnormal state of the kidneys or pancreas. For example, inflammation of the kidneys leads to increased levels of amylase in the blood, which can be determined by maltase and glucoamylase. Urease is a key enzyme used to detect renal failure by measuring urea content. Creative Enzymeshas been serving kidney & pancreas function diagnostic enzymes for years in the global market. More about kidney function test can be reached at Creative Enzymes’s website.

It is obvious from the above that enzymes play an irreplaceable important role in the field of clinical diagnosis and treatment. As a part of bioengineering, the important functions and research results of enzymes have been recognized worldwide. Making full use of the catalytic function, expanding the scope of application, and improving the application efficiency of enzymes have become our main goals. Creative Enzymes, as an enzyme manufacturer, are endeavoring to do so.

Deadly fire below US President’s Trump Tower residence

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

On Saturday, the Trump Tower, in Midtown, New York City, caught fire shortly before 18:00 EST (2200 UTC) on the 50th floor, claiming the life of a 67-year-old resident, Todd Brassner, who lived in apartment 50C. All other residents were evacuated without incident. During the fire, six firefighters received non-life-threatening burns and other minor injuries. Neither US President Donald Trump nor the First Family were in the building at the time of the fire.

The high-end Fifth Avenue address is the personal residence of President Donald Trump, whose family occupies the top three stories of the 58-story building. The US Secret Service maintains a constant security presence inside the building with the New York City Police Department guarding a hard perimeter, intended to stop vehicular attacks, and a soft perimeter, intended for on-foot attacks.

The four-alarm fire required 200 firemen, extra police, and paramedics. At 20:00 EST (0000 UTC Sunday), the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) declared the fire was under control. Trump tweeted, “Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” This is the second fire at Trump Tower since the election; previously on January 8, a fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a cooling tower on the roof. Three FDNY firefighters received minor injuries, and all residents and office workers evacuated without incident on that occasion.

Trump Tower provides a number of unique problems never before encountered by the Secret Service. Never has a US President’s personal residence been inside a skyscraper or in a densely populated area like Midtown. The security measures have disrupted vehicular and pedestrian traffic requiring time consuming detours and delaying emergency response.

The New York Fire Code did not mandate sprinkler systems at the time Trump Tower was built in 1983, which might have reduced the size and severity of the fire had they been present. The 50th-floor apartment was, according to FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, “[T]he apartment was virtually, entirely on fire.” The Secret Service monitors all the fire alarms in the building but it took time to find the source of the thick black smoke emanating from the fire. Secret Service Agents escorted the firefighters throughout the building, including the Trump residence.

Brassner, the sole casualty, was unconscious when firefighters pulled him out of apartment 50C. He was transported to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital. Originally listed as critical, he was pronounced dead sometime during the night. Brassner, guitar collector, was acquainted with artist Andy Warhol and was acknowledged in Warhol’s 1989 autobiography, The Andy Warhol Diaries. The cause of the fire is unknown, with investigations into Brassner’s death and the emergency response ongoing. Currently, the Secret Service leads the investigation.

Early morning fire kills four New York group home residents

Sunday, March 22, 2009

After an early morning fire began, four out of the nine people living at the Riverview Individual Residential Alternative group home located in Wells, New York were killed by the blaze. The Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office, which supervises the home, told the media that the fire started at approximately 5:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time. Two staff members were at the home at the time, who safely evacuated four of the five survivors.

The names of the residents killed in the fire were not able to be released due to New York’s Mental Hygiene Law, but are able to be identified as two adult men, aged 32 and 52, and two adult women, aged 43 and 60. A 71-year-old male was injured in the fire, and was taken to a hospital in Utica, a nearby city. The other four residents have been relocated to an unnamed group home. Both staff members are also being examined at the hospital.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and friends of the four victims and to continue to pray for the full recovery of those five people and two staff members who survived this incident. I also want to express my thanks and appreciation for the first responders and volunteers who worked swiftly and diligently to respond to this tragedy,” David Patterson, the governor of New York, said to the media.

The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined. However, the New York Civil Liberties Union stated that “the blaze appears to have been an electrical fire and the sprinkler system was knocked out immediately.” They also called for “an immediate investigation into the causes of and contributing factors of the fire.”

The New York State Department of State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is currently investigating the causes of the blaze, with help from New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the New York State Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.
