Seven armed robbers in South Africa shot dead by police

Monday, November 9, 2009

According to local police, seven armed men were shot to death by South African police early on Sunday at the Protea Coin security group’s cash depot in Polokwane.

The men reportedly arrived at the cash depot shortly after midnight, and shot out the lights of the building’s main entrance and security cameras. They were reportedly dressed in balaclavas and gloves, and the burglar alarms had apparently been tampered with.

Petrus van Niekerk, from the Protea Coin group, said that security guards in another part of the building heard shots being fired, presumably as the intruders were blasting out the lights and security camera. “The police reacted in a flash,” he noted.

“The criminals, who were wearing balaclavas, were already inside and had tampered with the alarm when the police arrived. They also had cut a burglar window leading to the main vault. After realising that they were in trouble, the robbers started firing at the police,” said police spokesman Musa Zondi.

Police returned fire, killing all of the intruders, according to Zondi. He added that none of the police officers or any passerby were injured, and no money from the cash depot was stolen. Three firearms and burglar’s tools were later recovered.

Werner Vermaak, a spokesman for the ER24 ambulance company, said that paramedics, after arriving at the depot, had proclaimed all of the intruders dead at the scene, from gunshot wounds. “Seven people have been fatally wounded and no one else was injured in this incident,” he said, as quoted by Eyewitness News.

In an official statement, national chief of police Bheki Cele said that security officials had responded to a distress call. “Our SAPS [South African Police Service] members have prevailed yet again. They were ready to strike in the early morning hours. People often forget that it might just as well have been members of the police force who were shot and killed,” said he. “This is a warning. Anyone who attempts to challenge the police will lose.”

“With the festive season upon us, we are bound to see more people trying their luck. But we are ready ensure that our people are not held to ransom by criminals and violent thugs,” the police chief continued. He praised the police for what he called their “swift and efficient action”.

The Beeld newspaper, however, said that they received information that the police might have received a tip-off the night before the incident, in which a special task force was told to “get ready”.

5 Tips For Settling Your Child Into School

By Ruth Edensor

Easing your young child out of your care and into school can be stressful and emotional for parents and children alike and end in crying and clingy childish behaviour, (mostly from the children, although I did shed a tear when mine started). As parents we would all really like to see our children walk into their new environment with some confidence and eagerness to make friends and learn new things. Here are five tried and tested tips to help.

1. Be prepared;

It is really important to get to know what is expected of you and your child before they start school, so that you don’t tell your child one thing and the school says another. You will be invited to a school visit whether as a group at the start of the term or individually if starting in the middle of the term. It is usually possible for your child to have previously made a few friends before they start, which can help children settle in quicker.

2. Be in a good routine;

To make sure that your child’s body clock is ready for the school run, it’s always a good idea to start adjusting to the same time frame as school some days before they start school. Having tired and grumpy children obviously will not help and children who are rushing out of the house in the morning and dropped off in a hurry often get anxious and irritable because they don’t have enough time to adjust.

3. Stay Positive;

It is important to stay positive as we saw in the above example. Even if you feel miserable (or over joyed) about your children starting school, try not to let it show. Children need to feel that you are happy about them going off to school or being away from you so that they don’t worry about you or feel that they are missing out on some other fun.

4. Tell them what you want them to do;

Letting children know how you want them to behaviour in a positive way is really helpful, such as ‘Sharing the toys’ rather than what you don’t want such as, ‘Don’t go fighting and don’t be naughty’, Explaining as much as you think they will understand helps them to be well prepared.

5. The goodbye routine;

Having a set goodbye routine is so useful because you know what you are doing and can stay calm and assertive and your child will soon get to know what is expected of them and settle much quicker. Here are some tips;

— Arrive on time, or a few minutes early if allowed. This will give you time to help your child to hang up their coat and put their belongings away in a calm manor. Or if they have to line up outside they can meet the other children in the playground which can be a good distraction.

— Follow the settings routine, some schools will allow you to stay for a few minutes and encourage the children to start to play. Others will want all the children to go and sit together for the register, or line up outside and come in as a class.

— Say good bye, when leaving your child, so that they don’t loose trust in you if you sneak off. It will depend on the class routine as to how you leave and if you are concerned talk to the teacher in private away from your child about how to go about things.

— Stay Positive Your child will look to you for assurance that they will be OK so a few reassuring words such as, you will be OK, mummy will be back for you soon, your friends are waiting to play, or go and paint daddy a picture and I will come back for it, (although not all at the same time) will all help them to get in a positive mindset. Don’t be tempted to shame them into going in happily and say things like, oh don’t be a baby, look Sammy’s not crying, don’t be silly or anything else negative because this will make them feel negative and knock their confidence.

— Set the boundaries as children don’t know them and you will put your child at ease if they know them, so be careful not to accidentally reward crying and clingy behaviour by staying as this will prolong the agony and children quickly realise that if they make a fuss mummy or daddy will stay a little longer.

— Pass your child to the teacher. If your child is starting to cry and cling to you, ask the teacher to take them from you. This is when your positive approach will really help your child to calm down. A receptive teacher will hold their hand or won’t mind you handing them over and offer some encouragement. As you find that they start to settle in the morning you can encourage them to sit or play with a friend or line up with the others.

— Give them praise for their efforts. When you pick your child up again from school, it is really encouraging to give them some praise for their efforts from going into school, even if they cried a little. Find something that they did well, such as ‘you were very good putting your bag on your peg this morning’, and pay little attention to their crying. This way they will feel pleased with themselves and want to repeat good behaviour.

Hope this helps best of luck to all little ones starting school soon and their moms and dads!!

Australian solar racing team parades at Sydney campus send-off

Friday, September 20, 2013

Australian solar racing team Sunswift paraded their fifth car, eVe, on the Kensington campus of the University of New South Wales, Sydney, yesterday. They are leaving for the 2013 World Solar Challenge this weekend. Both staff and students came to the send-off event in the early afternoon.

The vehicle route led from the biomed lawn of Michael Birt Gadrens in upper Kensington Campus down the University Mall to Anzac Parade with a few stops along the way at Commerce Courtyard and Globe Lawn. The driver, as well as the passenger, alighted as six members of the team carried eVe over the stairs of University Mall.

eVe, the latest car built by the Sunswift team, was designed for the new Cruiser class of the competition, and thus meets regulations for normal roads-worthy vehicles. While its predecessor IVy weighed under 150 kg, eVe weighs approximately 300 kg, with light carbon fiber monocoque construction and 15 kWh batteries weighing only 63 kg. However, eVe has achieved a similar drag coefficient, despite different overall shape and larger frontal area.

The 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is to take place on October 6–13, 2013.

US novelist Tom Clancy dies at age 66

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

The bestselling US novelist Tom Clancy died yesterday in a hospital in Baltimore, according to his publisher. The sixty-six year old is best known for a series of novels themed around espionage, military affairs and geopolitical intrigue, many of which have been adapted into movies and video games.

The Hunt for Red October, Clancy’s first novel, sold over five million copies and was made into a movie with Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery. President Ronald Reagan described the novel as a “perfect yarn”. The protagonist of Red October, CIA analyst Jack Ryan, starred in a series of Clancy adventures featuring wars, terrorist attacks and international political power games. Ryan has been played by Harrison Ford and later Ben Affleck.

Seventeen of his twenty novels have reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list. In 2002, Forbes magazine estimated Clancy’s earnings at US$47.8m. His final novel, Command Authority, is to be published in December.

E Bay Drop Shipping Scams, Secrets, &Amp; Tips!

Submitted by: Allan Morgan

Drop shipping is an excellent form of business for the small timer. It offers an extremely low cost way to make money online. Since you don t have to purchase any inventory up front, you can do it with a very small startup budget. Unfortunately, most people head straight to eBay to start selling once they ve found their drop shipping supplier. Many times they will find the same products selling for less than their wholesale cost. Other times they may come across the fatal out of stock issue. This article will show you some of the pros and cons of drop shipping on eBay.

First off, drop shipping can be a very profitable business. However, when combined with eBay, it is very difficult to do. eBay is highly trafficked but also extremely competitive. They also charge a lot of high fees to list and sell products. This means that you ll need big margins if you want to make a decent profit. Most people who start out in drop shipping end up signing up for a popular service like Doba and head straight to eBay. The problem is that everyone uses Doba so the market is saturated with these products. Not only that, but since so many people are selling the same products they go out of stock frequently. If you re one of the unlucky people who makes a sale on eBay and then goes to order your item and its out of stock, you re in trouble. You will receive negative feedback which will hurt your chances of making future sales. If you get more than one of these, you could be banned from selling.

This is a very common thing and is why you need to be very cautious about selling on ebay. It s important that you spend time finding a legitimate wholesale source that can give you the profit margins you need to make money. Not only that, but you need unique products if you want to stand out. Signing up for a popular service and selling generic products is not going to get you ahead. Remember, if you found your source on the first page of Google, chances are everyone else did too.

For these reasons you shouldn t completely rely on eBay for your drop shipping business. There are tons of other ways to sell products that don t charge high listing fees and are much less competitive. Plan ahead and come up with a strong marketing plan and you will make a lot more money than those who just struggle to make tiny profits on eBay. The web is an enormous selling platform and there is room for everyone. There s no need to cram everyone on to one website in a struggle to make sales.

You can make money on eBay, but its going to take a lot of effort on your part. Focus on multiple selling platforms and make sure to distinguish yourself and your product line from your competitors. Taking the easy way out is rarely the best way to go.

Brazilian President Lula met Chavez, military and economic cooperation

Thursday, February 17, 2005

CARACAS, Venezuela —The Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on February 14, 2005 in Caracas, Venezuela. Brazil and Venezuela signed agreements of cooperation on many areas. According to the Brazilian government this was a strategical encounteur. This meeting is the first of three meetings that President Lula will have with South American Presidents in three days. The scheduled meetings are with the presidents of: Venezuela (February, 14), Guiana (February, 15) and Suriname (February, 16).

President Lula was accompanied by the following comitiva: the Minister of Development, Industry, and External Trade Luiz Fernando Furlan, the Minister of Finance Antônio Palocci, the Minister of Foreign Relations Celso Amorim, the Minister of Health Humberto Costa, the Minister of Mines and Energy Dilma Roussef, the Minister of Tourism Walfrido Mares Guia, the President of Petrobras José Eduardo Dutra, the President of National Economic and Social Development Bank (BNDES) Guido Mantega, the President of Eletrobrás Silas Rondeau Cavalcante Silva and the Special Secretary for Aquaculture and Fisheries José Fritsch. In addition a delegation of executives representing enterprises from Brazil accompanied the President.

The Brazilian Ministry of External Relations told the trip aims the construction of a strategical alliance and commercial integration between both countries. The Brazilian Presidential Advisor Marco Aurélio Garcia said:”With this gesture, Brazil will consolidate one of its major political goals, which is the constitution of a South American community of nations”. He added: “These agreements with Venezuela are strategical. We want this agreement as a model for other agreements in the region.”

According to President Lula the integration of the Latin America is the priority number one of his government. Days before the arrival in Venezuela and commenting about the trip Lula said: “We’re going to do the same thing in Colombia and in other countries in which integration is no longer a campaign speech but part of the way we deal with real things, day to day”.

The integration of the Latin America is the politics repeatedly proposed by Lula during the meetings of the Foro de São Paulo. According to him and the others members of the Foro there must be a integration among all the left parties and governments of Latin America. The union aims to be an alternative and opposing force to the politics and influence of the richest countries, mainly the United States. Among the organizations which are usually participants of the Foro de São Paulo are: Communist Party of Cuba, Colombian Communist Party, Communist Party of Bolivia, Communist Party of Brazil, Workers’ Party, Paraguayan Communist Party, Peruvian Communist Party, Socialist Party of Peru, National Liberation Army, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front, Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity, Tupamaros.

On December 4, 2001 during the 10th edition of the Foro de São Paulo in Havana Lula said:”A shoal of small fish may mean the finishing of the hungry in our countries, in out continent. We should not think as the History ended on our journey by the Earth. Even it happens just once, or with one gesture, let’s effectively contribute to the improve the life of millions of human beings who live socially excluded by this neoliberal model.”[1]

In Venezuela, once again, he brought out the integration wish: “This is the biggest dream I am carrying, that we can negotiate collectively, not like one country, but like a set of countries so we can do that our people may have the chance to conquer the full citizenship.”

Things To Know Before Starting Forex Trading

Things to know before starting forex trading

by

Jeff Minton

So you\’ve decided that \’I have enough money in the bank, I\’ve saved enough. Why not invest it somewhere that will yield me more returns?\’ and then one of the options presented to you was that of trading currencies. Forex trading is akin to a game, if you don\’t play by the rules you\’ll be kicked out or if you don\’t know the rules you\’ll end up being a loser by fair or unfair means. One of the most catching phrase encountered when a rookie enters the \’game\’ of

forex currency trading

is the more the merrier i.e. the greater the risk the more is the profit. What should be kept in mind is that the reverse stands true as well. So, it is good to make a proper assessment where your current standing is i.e. ask this question to yourself Can I afford to risk x amount of money in something that is of such volatile nature? If your answer is yes then continue otherwise a serious thinking is inevitable for deciding the strategy as to how much and where to invest.

When one is just starting out, it is important to get the services of a forex broker. The reason is quite obvious-the rich experience and knowledge they have regarding the buying or selling of currencies and the advice they give related with the current and upcoming market trends. This will help in making prudent decisions that will eliminate the possibility of taking unnecessary risks and will minimise any losses. Thinking that one will make millions from the word go is something that should be kept on the backburner since it takes a while before any \’significant\’ gain can be made from currency trading unless there are millions to invest.

Many are skeptical of brokers considering the various stories they have heard of people being tricked by them. Some of these may be true but it is also a fact that before choosing a suitable broker, one should take precautions so as to avoid falling into any trap. You can start by checking whether he/she is registered with the regulating authorities. To get the best deals check the leverage offered and the reputation as well. Trading isn\’t betting but an assessment of various factors that is used for personal gains. It requires patience and knowledge; if you\’ve got these elements then trading market is the place to be in.
