Movie Review Beyond Rangoon

Movie Review – Beyond Rangoon

by

Daniel Breedlove

Beyond Rangoon is a dramatic movie involving numerous deaths and bloodshed. The main character of the movie, Laura Bowman, played by Patricia Arquette, has recently returned to her home in the United States to find her husband and young son murdered. In order to clear her mind and get her back on track, Laura’s sister, Andy Bowman, takes her on a trip to exotic Burma.

This movie takes on some international issues as well based on the fact that Burma is an unstable country led by a military dictatorship. The filming of this movie was done in nearby Malaysia since Burma and the United States are hateful of each other. Burma’s government is very aggressive and is not afraid to kill its citizens, especially during a democratic uprising as shown in the movie. A female named Aung San Suu Kyi, still alive and on house arrest today, was responsible for creating hope and joy that democracy would one day take over Burma.

While parading with her supporters in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi was met by military force. She forced the men with guns drawn to stand aside while she continued her march with Laura Bowman watching the whole time. Bowman would later return to her hotel after watching Aung San Suu Kyi with admiration to find that the military police were waiting for her with her sister. They were all ordered to leave the next day since Bowman did not respect Burma’s curfew laws for Americans.

While preparing to leave Burma for safety, Laura Bowman realized she had her passport stolen the night before while at the democracy demonstration. She was forced to stay behind in Burma while her sister Andy and their friend flew into a nearby country. Laura decided that even though there was much shooting and killing happening in the streets due to the democratic uprising, she would hire a tour guide to visit the countryside. Her tour guide takes her through numerous military checkpoints while bribing the military guards in his 1970’s Chevrolet. The two of them eventually stop by a house full of Burmese college students who are talking of their love for Aung San Suu Kyi. However, after a brief stay, news reaches them that the military is coming to kill them all since they are not in line with the dictatorship’s beliefs.

The group piles into three cars and leaves for the local train station. The tour guide ends up being shot while trying to escape after the military recognizes him as a professor and rebel against the dictatorship. Laura, who had already boarded the train to leave, comes back to save the professor and drives him away in the Chevrolet. They end up being pursued by the military who are trying hard to kill them, when Laura drives the professor’s car into a river. The two must swim down the river under some brush while being shot at in order to escape.

They eventually find a local Burmese man with two young boys who take them down river to find medicine. The professor has been shot in the chest and is fading quickly, but Laura Bowman is a doctor and can save him if they can find medicine and surgical tools. Laura and the professor eventually stop at a Burmese village where Laura sneaks through military guards and finds a medical structure. She obtains her tools and medicines and is ready to leave when a guard catches her. He decides not to kill her, but instead wants her to perform sexual favors. She was lucky enough to borrow a gun from the man who floated her down the river in his boat, and shoots the military guard in his leg allowing her to escape.

Bowman and the professor board the boat again and float down the river more until they get back onto land and attempt to escape to Thailand. There are thousands of people still being killed and trying to flee the country, but the two manage to board an ex-military truck full of refugees on their way to safety. Again, they are chased down by a military jeep which forces them off the road and into the river again. Laura and the professor manage to escape again with many of the refugees, and start wandering through the forest.

After walking through the forest for several hours, they are again met by military resistance. The common theme in this movie is that the Burmese military does not care who you are; if you look suspicious they will not hesitate to kill. A friendly, underground-type military group also arrives and fights off the cruel military group allowing the refugees a chance to cross a bridge over the river and safely enter Thailand. The dictatorship military keeps firing rockets and guns from afar and kills another three or four refugees when they had safety in sight. A young man is killed while holding his baby and is forced to hand off his child to his wife while he floated down river to his death. Laura makes sure to comfort his wife once she and the professor cross the bridge into Thailand.

Overall, this movie was very intense and somewhat cheesy at times. There is some obvious bad acting by some of the foreign actors in the movie. Also, at the end, the bridge to safety in Thailand has a big sign that reads ‘Welcome to Thailand’. This part of the movie seemed very unrealistic and like it was too happy of an ending. When everyone crosses into Thailand there is a Red Cross hospital set up where Laura puts her skills to work in caring for all of the injured Burmese people. This movie had a very good plot and gives much history about Burma and its diplomatic relations with the world. I rate this movie a 3.5 out of 5.

Java Multithreading Basics | Creating And Running Threads In Java With Examples}

Java Multithreading Basics | Creating and running threads in Java with examples

by

Conceptual basics of multithreading

Usually when we talk of multi-programming we refer to multiple programs running on a processor. A program is a set of instructions which when executed provides a specific functionality. An example of a commonly used program is a word processor such as MS Word. From the operating system point-of-view executing instances of programs are individual processes with each process having its own memory address space allocated to it.

As a process runs, it might need to take care of multiple internal tasks in parallel in order to deliver the complete set of functionalities which it offers. For example, as a person types in the word processor, there are multiple tasks running in the background. One task is responsible for saving changes in the document in a recovery file. Another task checks for spelling and grammatical errors as the user types. Yet another task does the basic task of displaying what a user types in the editor and so on.

All the above mentioned tasks are internal to the word processor program, i.e. they share the same memory address space which has been allocated to the word processor by the operating system. At the same time these internal tasks need to execute together or in parallel to ensure the programs functionalities are available to its users at the same time. Each of these parallel tasks are the smallest units of independent work carried out by program, and are instances of individual threads working to make the whole program work together.

To summarize the relation between programs, processes and threads. A program in execution is a process, and an executing process can have multiple threads running in parallel within it to accomplish multiple tasks that the process needs to carry out. The diagram below depicts the relationship between processes and threads.

A thread in Java is the smallest unit of dispatchable code which can be executed. As the bigger program executes in a process space of its own, its multiple internal threads carry out their individual tasks and communicate with each other to make the program work as a whole. These internal threads of work use a portion of the memory address space allocated to their parent program/process. As we will see in detail in forthcoming tutorials on concurrency management, this sharing of memory space has both advantages(inter-thread communication) and disadvantages(synchronization issues).

Thread management classes in Java are all designed around management of parallel internal threads of work over their entire lifecycle from creation to destruction. As we study basic and advanced features for multithreading in Java in this and upcoming tutorials in Java Concurrency series, we will cover all aspects related to defining, managing and optimizing threads.

To run a piece of functionality in parallel, you will need to first encapsulate it as a separate thread and then execute that thread. Let us now learn how to define and run individual thread instances as per our needs.

Creating and running a thread defined by extending Thread class

The first way of defining your own thread functionality involves sub-classing the java.lang.Thread class. An instance of Thread class holds a single thread of execution of a running program.

Creation of a new parallel thread using Thread class involves the following 3 steps

1.Define a class which extends Thread class.

2.Override the run() method of Thread class, and write your custom thread logic in it.

3.Invoke the start() method on your custom Thread subclass to start the thread execution.

Creating and running a thread defined by implementing Runnable interface

The second way to create a parallel thread is by implementing java.lang.Runnable interface. There are 4 steps involved in creating and running a separate thread using Runnable

1.Define a class which implements Runnable interface.

2.Override the run() method of Runnable interface, and write your custom thread logic in it.

3.Wrap the Runnable instance inside a new Thread instance. This is accomplished by using one of the multiple constructors provided by Thread class which accept the Runnable interface as parameter.

4.Invoke the start() method on the newly created Thread instance to start the thread execution.

Drugs Used In Diabetes Choice Of Insulin}

Drugs Used in Diabetes – Choice of Insulin

by

Franchis

The choice of an insulin depends upon the condition of the patient. In emergencies such as diabetic coma, crystalline insulin (only soluble insulin) is preferred because of its quick onset of action. It is repeated at 6-hour intervals given intravenously usually, until the situation is under control. Crystalline insulin is also employed in combination with intermediate-acting insulin preparations for quick action. However, a dose of intermediate-acting insulins taken before breakfast is effective in controlling most cases of diabetes, other than some cases of juvenile diabetes, in which there is a marked rise in blood sugar during the night and in which, an additional evening dose may be needed. The use of long-acting preparations, with the hope of a single injection for controlling diabetes, has been disappointing and is not advocated. Premixed mixture of crystalline and lente insulin (Biphasic insulin) are convenient for tighter control of fasting and post meal blood glucose elevation. A large number of such preparations are available in the market. A convenient device is insulin pen (Nayolet) which has premixed insulin mixture and can be put into packet by executives or others who are on the move. It is, however, expensive, although the price may come down in the future.

Dosage: The dose varies with the severity of the condition and the response of the patient. Repeated estimation of blood sugar during the treatment is helpful in adjusting the doses. In general, the treatment is started with an intermediate-acting preparation and a dose of 10 to 15 units is given; 2/3 dose is given before breakfast and 1/3 dose before dinner. This is increased by 5 units per day with a constant monitoring of glucose levels of blood and urine till satisfactory control is achieved. All the preparations of insulin are ineffective orally and have to be injected under the skin. Recently, computer-assisted, battery-driven implantable devices have become available, which inject insulin appropriate to the requirements (insulin pumps). Usually highly purified insulins are used in these devices. It will be a major breakthrough in this field if someone discovers a drug as effective as insulin that can be given orally. Newer Insulins Newer insulins are now available. They are 3 to 5 times more expensive. They have the advantage that insulin allergy, fat loss at the site of injection, and sometimes, fat accumulation, occur less frequently. The possibility of the formation of anti-insulin antibodies is also less. Adverse Effects: The most common adverse effect is hypoglycaemia. Hypoglycaemia may be caused by the delay or omission of meals or by unexpected exertion. The symptoms of hypoglycaemia include intense hunger, sweating, palpitation of the heart, tremors, weakness, and irritability. These symptoms can be recognized early and can be relieved by sugar, glucose or sweets in 10 to 20 minutes. If you are taking acarbose with insulin injection then use only glucose and not household sugar. It is to be noted that long standing diabetics may not notice all of these symptoms of low blood sugar. Insulin may cause allergic reaction at the site of the injection, characterized by stinging and itching sensations associated with reddening and swelling of the skin. Generalized allergic reactions are rare. Human insulin does not cause allergic reactions. Repeated injections of insulin at the same site may cause depression or elevation at the injection site (Lipodystrophy). In rare cases patients may not respond to insulin (due to insulin resistance). These problems are uncommon with human insulins.PrecautionsUse disposable insulin syringes only for insulin by self-infection.Reduce the dose of insulin if a meal is likely to be missed or physical exertion is likely.Take suger or glucose if any symptoms of hypoglycaemia appear.Consult the doctor immediately if any allergic reaction occurs.Rotate the site of insulin injection i.e start from one thigh, then rotate to abdominal wall then forearm then upper arm after one side rotate to the next side.
