Triple limb-reattachment fails – boy loses foot

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Terry Vo, the 10-year old Australian boy who had two hands and a foot reattached by surgeons after losing them in an accident, has had to have the foot re-amputated. He will be given a prosthetic foot in its place.

The operation to re-attach three limbs was thought to have been a first – but was ultimately unsuccessful, with the foot having died inside, and receiving insufficient blood supply following the surgery to reattach it.

“That would lead to the small muscles in the foot actually constricting, the toes bending over and a deformed …. foot that is sort of clawed over and doesn’t have good sensation,” said plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love today, on Australia’s ABC Radio.

“Even if you can get all of that to survive, he [would be] worse off than having had an amputation.”

“What is very disappointing is that for the first two days after [the operation] the foot looked absolutely magnificent,” he said.

Terry’s hands were healing well, said the surgeon. The prosthetic foot would allow him to walk normally, since his knee was intact.

Fibromyalgia Relief With Nopalea

By Frank Yaconis

Marys life was completely turned upside down from the chronic pain she felt throughout her bodies. Some days it was bearable enough for her to hobble to work and keep the pain at bay with over-the-counter painkillers. But other days, she was reduced to lying prone, bedridden with the pain that shot throughout her body.

Then one day, doctors diagnosed her with a nebulous, elusive condition called fibromyalgia. Little was known about this debilitating disease but doctors knew one thing more and more people were suffering from it. Without much research or knowledge about the disease, it was also difficult, if not impossible to treat.

Many people in the early days of the discovery of fibromyalgia stumbled upon remedies that helped relieve pain. Or at least, ways to not make it worse. While scientists and researchers continue to explore ways to treat this painful disease, some people who suffer from it have found tremendous relief from drinking an all-natural juice called Nopalea.

One reason Nopalea might provide help with the pain is that it is made from the Prickly Pear Cactus. In fact, water and the cactus are the juices two main ingredients. The Prickly Pear Cactus is a plant that has grown rampant in the Sonoran desert for centuries. Native Americans living in the South and Central portion of the Americas have used the cactus as both a food and medicine for ages.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utg_hqbJAoE[/youtube]

It is even said that use of the plant dates back to the time of the ancient Aztecs.

The Prickly Pear Cactus has seen a revival in recent years because it is a natural anti-oxidant as well as a natural anti-inflammatory. Natural products that help with inflammation have become even more popular now that a possible link has been made between chronic inflammation and a variety of serious illnesses and diseases, even including cancer.

About ten years ago, Time Magazine came out with a cover story that showed how chronic inflammation has become such a problem. The article talked about how inflammation can go haywire and that this might be linked to serious disease.

While inflammation is the bodys first ring of attack against invaders, if it doesnt turn off when the battle is over, then it can become problematic. That is what might be causing other issues within the body.

Scientists are excited about this possible connection and what it could mean as far as finding cures and preventing life threatening conditions.

Meanwhile, people who suffer from chronic pain, such as fibromyalgia, are finding that they dont need to wait for researchers. They are satisfied with the results they experience from introducing a regimen of drinking Nopalea Juice. Most people who take the Nopalea Wellness Challenge follow strict guidelines on how to ingest the juice and then catalog their results.

The juice is all-natural and is sweetened by Agave Nectar. In addition, it is fortified with more than a dozen extracts and concentrates from different fruits.

Other people who are now fans of Nopalea Juice say they have found relief from joint pain, headaches, even acne.

American prize-winning author Studs Terkel dead at 96

Saturday, November 1, 2008

Studs Terkel, an American historian, radio talk show host and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, has died at the age of 96. His son, Dan Terkel, said he died peacefully in his Chicago, Illinois home.

“My dad led a long, full, eventful, sometimes tempestuous, but very satisfying life. [His death was] peaceful, no agony. This is what he wanted,” said his son in a statement to the press.

Terkel was born in New York City in 1912. He moved to Chicago when he was eight years old. He was mostly known for his oral histories, but he was also host of his own radio show, an author of several books, and an activist.

In 1985, Terkel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize after his writing about World War II in his book called The Good War. In 1970, he published a book about the Great Depression, entitled Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression, which told the stories of people from all walks of life who were affected by the stock market crash in 1929.

In 2007 Terkel published his memoirs, titled Touch and Go, in which he described himself as a “martini and cigar man” who never retired.

“It was those loners — argumentative ones, deceptively quiet ones, the talkers and the walkers — who, always engaged in something outside themselves, unintentionally became my mentors,” said Terkel in his memoirs.

Philippines lowers GDP growth target amid new COVID-19 Delta variant lockdowns

Thursday, August 19, 2021

The country’s Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC) on Wednesday revised its projection of its gross domestic product (GDP) growth assumption to 4-5% from the previous 6-7%, due to the reimposition of strict lockdowns brought by the risks of the COVID-19 Delta variant. The committee is composed of the Department of Budget and Management, Department of Finance, the National Economic and Development Authority, Office of the President, and the Central Bank of the Philippines.

This is the second negative revision done by Filipino economic managers this year. The previous target was made last May, which was then another revision of a target of 6.5-7.5% made last year. The latest figures are now in line with previous pessimistic predictions from global debt watchers and multilateral lenders like Fitch Solutions and Moody’s Analytics. The latest revision also means that the government no longer sees the national economy recovering back to pre-pandemic levels this year, looking forward to 2022 instead with its growth projections in the next years unchanged. 2022 has a projected growth of 7-9%, while 2023 and 2024 have a projected growth of 6-7%.

From August 6 to 20, an enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), which is the country’s own version of a strict lockdown, is in full force again on Metro Manila and the provinces of Bataan and Laguna over the spread of the Delta variant. This is the fourth time an ECQ was imposed since the pandemic started in March last year. Karl Chua, a chief economist, estimated earlier that the 14-day lockdown would result in at least 444,000 jobs lost, and cost the economy 210 billion pesos, or around 4.1 billion US dollars.

Despite the pessimistic projection, the Philippines registered a somewhat better-than-expected GDP growth in the 2nd quarter of 2021 at 11.8%, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. When looked at a quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted basis though, the national economy contracted by 1.3%. The 16.9% contraction in the same quarter of 2020 should also be taken into account, according to economist JC Punongbayan.

The DBCC says that mass vaccination will significantly help the country’s recovery, by reducing the need for lockdowns, especially in key economic centers like Metro Manila. 27.8 million doses has been administered in the Philippines, with 12.6 million Filipinos fully vaccinated. The government aims to vaccinate 50 to 70 million adult Filipinos to achieve herd immunity this year.

School stampede in China kills eight, injures dozens more

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

State media reported earlier today that a stampede in a school in China has killed at least eight people and injured an additional 26.

The accident occurred at 21:10 local time at the Yucai Middle School, a privately-run institution in city of Xiangxiang, located in the Hunan Province. Reports say that several students were leaving their studies when one fell down a staircase, causing others to lose their balance and tumble down as well.

Those hurt in the incident were treated at three hospitals in the town, and eight other students were being observed by medical personnel despite appearing not to have been hurt.

Chinese officials are investigating the incident and have been questioning the city educational bureau and local school authorities, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Startup web broadcaster Joost signs deal with Warner Brothers

Friday, May 11, 2007

Internet TV came one step closer to reality as startup web broadcaster Joost recently announced that it signed a deal with Warner Brothers to host some of its WBTV-branded content. This deal, along with content deals with other television providers, lately Time Warner and Sony Pictures Television, makes Joost (pronounced “juiced”) the sweetheart aggregator and provider in the coming on-demand, freely distributed online TV broadcasts.

Joost bills itself as an online community where viewers, “can watch what you want, when you want, in full-screen eye-quality proper TV.” The service currently provides about 150 channels, although the availability of some channels varies by country or region due to copyright restrictions. Viewers can navigate screen menus to make programming choices, and then use “widgets” from drop-down menus that allow users to interact with the programming.

“Widgets include a clock, integration of instant messaging, RSS/News feeds and a chat room for the particular channel being viewed on the screen. Users have the ability to opt out of the widgets during viewing or can easily access them from the mouse-activated menus,” according to John P. Gamboa of the Dailey Aztec.

The development efforts at Joost are backed by technology-savvy web entrepreneurs Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. The two used Internet peer-to-peer networking to create Kazaa, and then later Skype. The cutting-edge music file sharing and telephony implementations of these two applications, some say bleeding edge, appear to have had an affect on the approach being used now by the two at Joost along with co-developers. The copyright infringement-plagued Kazaa was sold to Sharman Networks in 2002. Skype was sold to eBay in October 2005 for $2.6 billion. In July last year, Kazaa settled with music record labels by making a $100 million payment as reparations for illegal file sharing activities employed by users of the application that enabled the distribution of copyright-infringed music files.

People are looking for increased choice and flexibility in their TV experience…

Kazaa became a copyright bust. Skype became a jaw-dropping hit, and a hit in the jaw of telcom carriers whose management of voice transmission became undermined by the sub-set of Internet users with broadband connectivity and peer-to-peer web awareness. The evolution is distinctively one-way. Online broadband peer-to-peer connectivity is here to stay after a nasty birth.

“People are looking for increased choice and flexibility in their TV experience, while the entertainment industry needs to retain control over their content,” said Joost chief executive officer Fredrik de Wahl. “We’ve married that consumer desire with the industry’s interests.”

The “marriage” of TV content to “consumer desire” is the hot-spot that media conglomerates are still seemingly trying to figure out as they dispense their less valuable content for Internet consumption. Joost has managed to secure some rights to webcast programming, but the content is not the highest quality broadcasted TV programming currently available through established subscription cable and satellite distribution channels, or even free airwave TV.

Underlying the concept of Internet TV is the distribution of content in a way that is more efficient than the existing model. Peer-to-peer networking over the Internet makes programming available when a user asks for it. The ‘on-demand’ feature of this approach frees up space in the distribution pipeline and provides feedback to the aggregator to know exactly what is in demand. It gives a middle-man the leverage to negotiate with media conglomerates and then manage a pipeline flooded with unviewed content, thereby conserving bandwidth. It also lets viewers opt for free online TV programming through content arrangements made by the web broadcaster, who acts as a gateway to the programs. However, it is not an advertising-free service.

The Joost hoopla is partly spurred on by its expansionist decision on May 1 to allow users of the Beta version to distribute 99 invitations to other people who could become Beta users.
